I got this question by email. The fertilizer corrosion probably needs to be neutralized. What would you guys recommend?

"I have found dozens of very old oil cans cleaning out barns on my deceased grandfather's farm. Not in good enough shape for collectors, but they mean a lot to me. Most are at least partly rusted or corroded from fertilizer. What is the best way to preserve what is left without harming the writing that remains? A friend said to rub them with motor oil, but I wanted a more knowledgeable opinion. Your help would be greatly appreciated! Lisa"

If you just want to give them a little shine and you're not trying to restore them, I would recommend good old Howard's Feed N Wax. I use it on a lot of old things (metal or wood) just to bring out a little gloss without ruining the patina of the as found condition.

I dont know if fertilixer is acidic or alkaline but you would use the opposite if you wanted to nutralize it. Lemon juice is acidic-baking powder is alkaline. Watch it doesnt remove grafics. Rinse and proctect with some wax..Just my idea.(Im no chemist) Jim

Went into Lowes to get that Feed and wax for some signs but they didn't have it, I think I remember some antique shops selling it but unfortunatly all the antique shops here in high desert have gone under due mostly to ebay. I will try to find info on internet.
