I'm working on a gas pump rust-oration. I've seen some great ones on here before and I need some help choosing a clear coat.
Any recommendations on a brushable clear finish to give it that rich and wet look? Or spray can might be ok. Just thought of brushing in case it's too cold outside to spray. Can't have overspray in the garage. I don't even know what type to use. Laquer, varnish, urethane?
Any advice or recommendations would be very helpful.
Thanks
chris

Oh...and I still need some hinges for a Tokheim 39 tall. Please see my post in the wanted section.

Boiled linseed oil is the binder/base for a lot of the old paints. I would think that it would work, but I've never tried it. You should be able to get a can at any home improvement store. I think you should try it on something out in your yard as a test, something that you want to re-do later, to see if it will give you the look you're after.

Chris, here is a post by Don Sherwood of what he did to one of his pumps in the OLD DAYS!

Thanks for the link, Dick - I have been looking for this post - even asked Don about it but he came back with a similar restoration of a Tydol pump he did (which also looked great)...

I guess most of us have a good candidate for this type of "restoration" behind our houses/barns whatever :-)

Anyone that can give a hint of a product that would cover a gas pump - I have been searching over here in Sweden and seem to find only hobby stuff for indoors use.

thanks again,
Claes

Thank Dick. That's pretty cool! My pump already has the patina. I just need to coat it with something to bring the color and shine back.

Have to get rid of the stuff they call Colo Beer somewhere.

I think the problem you might be having is confusing "Colorado" beer with the stuff Jeff drinks! Colorado is near the top of the list of most micro breweries in any state. And most of them are excellent!
