I ran across this Skelly oil can and would like to know some history on it or what year its from, best I can see is its a 10 gallon and has a marking on it 7001.

Not made by Skelly, made for Skelly. They must have purchased a quantity of them so they requested their name be embossed on them.
It is a delivery can, used to deliver 5 whatever gallons of whatever to farms etc.

Back when there was little or no interest in them I once left over 50 of them in the garage of the ex. I didn't want them, mainly because they were covered with oil.

I think they date back to the 40's or earlier. I've seen pictures of my father's tank wagons with the cans on the side of the tank. He delivered oil to farmers with them. By the 1950's my father was throwing them away because he considered them obsolete. The ones he had had a butterfly, or marker in them to measure either 5 or 10 gallons.

I have tank wagon photos showing bulk cans in use back into the 1920's. That particular style is more indicative of 30's and 40's.
