I have a question about globe lenses for the globe experts on this site.

There is a proxibid auction this weekend in Kansas and there are several lenses being sold. Some of the lenses indicate they are NOS lenses right out of the box with a "Clear" film on the back. Other lenses listed are listed the same, but indicate they have a "White"film on the back. The listing shows pics of each type of lense. To me they look the same from the Front side. Here is a link to one of the auction items:

https://www.proxibid.com/asp/LotDetail.asp?ahid=1425&aid=68797&lid=17075522&rts=/asp/searchadvanced_i.asp%23searchid%3D11900828%26type%3Dlot%26search%3Dglobe%26sort%3Drelevance%26length%3D100%26start%3D1%26refine%3D%26nc%3D1374874985434#

What's the difference? I don't own enough globes to know what the difference is. Does the globe light up differently if it has a white film on the back vs. a clear film on the back?

Any info would greatly be appreciated. Thx! Greg

No such thing as a 'clear' film or a 'white' film on the back.

Regular lenses are always finished with a coat of white frit as the last layer before firing.

Very, very seldom, you will see some lenses without the white - but these original lenses were specifically produced to go on milkglass bodies where you would NOT need the white for the background.

Later . . .

Jim
