I picked this up today. I was told it was a battery box and came from a service station. It is made of a hard brittle rubber, has six compartments with raised ridges in the bottom. It has a flat area in the center of the front that is not textured. I would say it is to attach a label and the thing in general looks like a battery case for the 40's too me. I am thinking it is some type of a display piece for holding a product.
Any thoughts or comments or pictures would help. Thanks,

Empty battery case. I am pretty sure the plates go in there,then the top.

Yep, big battery box. Likely industrial/deep cycle battery due to size.
