Everyone check your glass bodies. I check mine every couple months to make sure they are not too tight and not to loose. Today I heard something POP and it was my mobilgas globe. Heart went to my stomach. I took it down and the thing was so tight I could barely get the screw to move. I was able to loosen it up and the lenses were fine. This weather is a killer. -10 one day and 50 the next. I like my lenses to rattle a bit, not so loose the screws are cocked weird, so have no clue how it got so tight so quickly. So check your globes!!!

When I turn the lights on in my globes during the colder months they'll make popping and creaking noises for awhile. The worst ones for making scary noises are metal body globes as the lenses and bodies expand and contract at very different rates. Glass lenses on glass bodies usually aren't a problem unless the screws are too tight to start with. I live close to a stone quarry. The noises my globes make when they blast is unnerving to say the least.

I must be lucky, this globe has seen 22 winters and 21 summers. Still good to go. But I'm going to check it when the weather gets better if ever.
Have gas all the time

Nice tall ten!! Too windy by my place...falling tree branches would have taken that out during the first year in BC.

That is why I use small rubber washers between screw and the glass.
Looking for anything from Hoosier Pete, Platolene 500 and Red Bird.

Hi, John. Do you put the rubber washer on the inside of the globe....between the nut and the glass body? Or, on the outside between the screw head and the lens? Thanks. John

John You put them on the outside not on the etched part . The rubber can eat away the back of the lenses. I do this on most globes . Being a globe I got a few months ago I never placed rubber in it

John Depends....Putting the rubber washer between the screw head and the lens will protect the notched area of the lens, especially if the screw has a sloppy fit in the notch. I've found several globes in the wild that had the rubber washers (or sometimes a paper or fiber washer) between the knurled nuts and the body. You can tell by feeling the back side of the screw hole on the body if you need a soft washer between the nut and the body.
