Hello: My name is Tim & I have been lurking here in the background for awhile. I have restored several pump some back to orginal some I like to put my own touchs to. Now I have a ? about a pump that I believe is a bowser 318 clock face it appears to be a Gulf no-nox from what I can make out on the front panel, Would the Gulf no-nox have been painted on or a decal,or maybe sign. the had the original globe up until two years ago when a bale of hay fell on it. Thats my luck.. I will post pics soon ------------------ www.indyhiwinders.org [This message has been edited by arthurtim (edited 01-10-2007).] [This message has been edited by arthurtim (edited 01-12-2007).]

Hi Tim. Welcome to Oldgas.com Shop Talk. According to PCM Guide to Gas Pump Restoration , Gulf pumps before WWII often used decals to designate gasoline grade and brand while after WWII they used more porcelain pump plate signs. That does look like a Bowser 318 or maybe a 310. Sorry to hear about the globe. Ouch. ------------------ Jim "Oldgas" PottsYour host and moderator

yes it appears to have been a decal but the no-nox must have been seperate from the gulf decal. also would it have had the contains lead sign in 31? thanks Tim ------------------ www.indyhiwinders.org [This message has been edited by arthurtim (edited 01-12-2007).]

...seems to me Ethyl was first marketed in September, 1923, then pulled not long after because some poor souls contracted lead poisoning...Gulf came out w/ No-Nox as an alternative to ethylized fuel in 1925...after the decision was made to add Ethyl at the refinery (rather than at the pump), Gulf added Ethyl to No-Nox in the early 1930's...
...judging by the size of what looks like the remnants of the decal on your pump, I would guess that particular decal would be no earlier than 1937, and more likely after that...a larger photo of the decal might prove helpful...
...and yes, you would need a 'Contains LEAD' sign - preferably the taller version...
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

One of the things you need to take into consideration when restoring a pump is. it may have been made in 31 but it could have been used untill Weights and Measures made them quit using clocks, I don't know when that was,Jack might, but periodically the oil co would update their pumps , new paint, globes, etc. A post war color/ad scheme might be just as appropriate as a pre war, or anything in between. You don't HAVE to restore it back to the date is was made.
