Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to remove the ring that holds in the sight glass on an Erie 70? I tried DB's approach of a big hammer and a number of beers and even went to a larger hammer but had to limit the number of beers and still no luck. Does anyone make or have a tool that would fit the 4 notches?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check my past post on the Erie 71 my class and I restored. We made a tool to loosen the sight glass ring out of an old horseshoe. I included a picture of the tool in that post. It worked really well. Good luck!

I used a dremel thin cutting wheel to carefully cut the gasket that holds the ring to the manifold. If you look closely you can see the gasket in there. The gasket cuts fairly easily and you can feel when you are touching the metal. After going around the entire ring, (make sure you cut all of the gasket) you can either unscrew the ring by hand or use a rubber strap wrench. I recently did four of them and it worked!
Hope this helps.
