Socony Vacuum issued two types of Lubrite brand motor oil cans in the late 1930s and 1940s; the "plain" Lubrite and the "Standard" Lubrite where the word "Standard" appeared above the word "Lubrite" on the can. Does anyone know why there were two types of labelling? I assume the "Standard" had something to do with Standard Oil, any ideas out there? Thanks a lot.

Lubrite was an independent oil refinery until bought by Socony Vacuum at some time.
Since Socony is short for Standard Oil of New York, a guess could be that they put "Standard" on the cans initially to show who was in charge.
There were so many differnet cans available and when I looked in my own picture gallery I found these:
Blue standard Luberite, blue Luberite small shield pegasus, white Magnolia Luberite, white Socony Luberite and white Luberite small shield pegasus. I'm sure there were more available. I can send pics if there are any of these you are unfamiliar with.
