Hey guys, just finished building this thing and moving all my stuff into it. Haven't got the walls up for hanging signs yet, but thought I would share some pics. Now that I have a place to work, maybe I can finally get around to restoring some of this stuff.

Here are the images that archimedes asked me to post: Wow, nice space! The pumps look right at home with the soda machines. Could I come over and take the Mach I for a spin? ------------------ OldgasYour host and moderator

Great Garage Archimedes! I too am in the process of building a new garage. I'm so excited I can hardly stand it. It's 40'x60' which is huge, but now I'm wondering if big enough? I'm having my office built on one end, with a bath/shower attached. I keep wondering what I've forgotten? What would "you guys" put in your garages if you designed one? Come on guys, give me some ideas it's not to late to make changes!

Don, well mines a 30x40 if it gives you any idea. Man I thought mine was big. LOL! Thats some serious display space. I would put a fake gas station storefront in one that size. Good Luck with that thing!

I'ld build in a "fake" island and make a gas station scene. I would no doubt be doing some automotive service and restoration work, so a lift is absolute, along with air, water & drain (dry well), bead blaster, curtained off paint area, and an abundance of electric service. I'ld have a bunch of the "vintage" porcelain shaded lights dropped down in the display areas. Painted floors throughout, plus a couple areas with a black/white checker pattern done in tile. What else????? Now if I had some real money, I'd.... Brian

Are the buidings to be used for collection display only or is restoration work going to be done? If work is performed, the work area needs to be walled off from the display area (or hire someone to come in everyday and clean...and I will volunteer!) Built in, enclosed cabinets with glass doors would be nice to display globes and other smalls. Lots of lighting for work/show area. I had a 10'x10' paintbooth built in one corner, exhausting air thru a wall cutout. No building is TOO large. I thought how huge mine was and how naked the walls would be. Now I need to double the size of it. I don't think a 100'x100' would be too large for "our kind". LOL Keep the progress pics coming.

archimedes, Looks great!!! I have a 30x50 and it is already to small. I will agree with Gary on the wall thing for sure to keep the showroom stuff seprate. I just finished the inside of mine with 65 sheets of structure wood, 100 amp service, 8 8' high out put cold start lights and a 165,000 btu furance. The gas line isn't out there yet but it will be nice when it is except when the gas bill arrives then it will be a sad day.
Looking for anything from Hoosier Pete, Platolene 500 and Red Bird.

Thanks guys. Mostly what I built this for was storage/display/a place to work on my cars and tinker with the pumps and such. I do all the really nasty stuff like gutting outside. Once everything is reasonably clean I bring it inside. I haven't had that much time to work on any of the pumps or soda machines in nearly a year, so this is just to preserve them til I can get to them. As soon as I get the walls up and hang my signs I will send some more pics.

Here are three photos of where we display our stuff. I built what is called a tobacco barn/pole barn, with a country store front and porch. It is 34' X 72'. I thought that it was more than I would ever need, but Dr. Ruth was right, size matters. It is full and I need more room. The poles and framing give you lots of places to hang signs and stuff. The only problem with this type of building is that you don't have an open enough space for a classic car but it works great for signs, globes and all of the other collectables. It is easy to section off theme areas because of the placing of the poles. Some day you will say I wish that I had made it bigger. Rex in Kentucky. Rex, that place is incredible. You have an outstanding collection! You're right, part of me wishes it was bigger, but I can't afford to buy anymore stuff. For now that is ;o).
