I appreciate all the great advice on the sign. Good news is that I do have a written receipt, a canceled check along with the assurance from Leroy’s that I’ll get my money back if it doesn’t go my way. Leroy’s is quite certain he can prove the sign to be his (or mine now).

I’ll keep everyone posted.
Chuck

I finally got the stolen sign thing resolved after a lot of headaches. The police impounded my sign at the request of the guy who claimed he owned it. The detectives took it from here and began their investigation. After interviewing everybody and their brother the police handed all the facts over to the magistrate who ruled that it was a legal sale to me and that additional facts would be required to take it any further. The detectives informed the other guy that the only way to pursue it would be through court in a lawsuit. I guess he found out that the sign wasn’t a $250,000 sign as he originally thought.

Unfortunately the sign sat in impound for nearly 5 months racking up storage charges and the police now claim that the impound was voluntary on my part so they accept no responsibility for storage fees. Funny, it didn’t sound that way when they came to pick it up!!

A HAPPY ENDING. I worked with the impound yard and got my sign back and it still came in below fair market value. The pictures are deceiving. The sign has great gloss and no damage. Now I have to figure out where I’ll put it.

The link below has the origianl story in case you missed it the first time.

Dick,
The axe actually was used. LOL. I had to use the back side of the axe it to seperate the ring from the pole.

Mike,
Not sure if I'll keep it or sell it. I guess it depends if the right offer comes along.

The storage fee wasn't a big deal...it was minimal. The thing that ticked me off was them saying that it was voluntary after everything was said and done. I was just glad to get the sign back.

Hey Chuck -

I am very glad it worked out!

IF that is a TEXACO sign and pole I would be interested in buying it for a station I am restoring here in Kansas.
