One of my customers brought this in today and gave it to me, says it was a complimentary gas gauge, if you can make out the writing, one of them says 1928 Ford

OK, so it says 1926 Ford, now that I see it in the picture

Should I try cleaning or leave it alone?
All the writing is legible although hard to make out in places, under the 1926 Ford it reads "Ford Oval tanks" and "Ford square tanks" with corresponding gallons and lines

I have one from Indian Refining Company. I think they were used to check the gasoline level in the fuel tanks before gauges were used. You could try cleaning it with soap and water but try a small area first, just to be safe that no writing comes off. Cool piece!

For cleaning old wood advertising items I use a block of pencil eraser. Try a small area first and be extra careful around the lettering.
