Without knowing the contents, this is only a guess. Could have been used as a reservoir [as used on old cook stoves].

Picked up the two versions of the Auto Diesel signs in the last few weeks. The earlier version is dated 1956. According to the books it was supposed to be used 1963-67. Made trip up to Wisconsin on the weekend and picked up the pump on the right. It is a G&B model 105. I got it on this site from fellow oldgaser TOMD. The Bennett 150 was picked up at the fall Peotone show. [This message has been edited by wfort39663 (edited 01-06-2008).]

DOC:
Probably NOT a mis-print. Probably just screwed up during assembly.
The 'side' panels were printed up prior to being assembled into cans - so I'm pretty sure someone just messed up and made the can upside-down.
That is a standard oil can in all other respects - so it would not have worked on a stove or other item using a resevoir.
Later . . .
Jim

Here is a pump that I recently bought from someone who never seemed to get around to doing a restoration and finally lost interest. I friend of mine has been looking for a pump for a while since he saw mine and liked the way they look outside a shop. I gave the pump to him and he's going to paint two pumps for me. He's a auto painter so it is working out well for both of us. Good buy on some e-bay globes and a neat bottle from Rex Benson

You know db to well, he has already asked about it. The a-38 is the first one I have seen in person with the extenda hose option. Even the base is different than a regular a-38
