Few pics. of the neon globe bodies I made start to finish. Quite a few steps left out but gives the general work that went into these. Check The for sale section where these are avalible if you need one or know someone who needs one. Russ few sheared pieces. bent and bead rolled to shape. inner and outer ring rolled to Dia. not yet trimmed. 2 base pieces rolled and shrunk.

Hello Russ,
First of all, nice craftsmanship on this item.
Pardon my lack of knowledge about this item, but I would like to learn more. Are you attempting to reproduce an item that existed in the past? I've never seen anything like it before and am curious if this was used to advertise brands OR if this is a fantasy item you've created. Please tell me more.
Thank you.
Chad

Here is a photo of an original 18" neon globe body with the neon tubing and transformer. The bodies Russ made up are very good, and like Dick said originals are quite rare. Aaron Hop

Wow! Very cool.
Question: Would these have been placed on specific pumps or was this a universal globe body?
I'm trying to picture how advertising glass would look in this unusual globe body.

Chadhass, Dodogas, lenses are rare and bodies are harder yet to find. Recently there where 5 lenses and one body found used in a salesman sample case. Which of course left 4 extra lens with no way for displaying them, which led to the making of these. Check out Scott Benjamin's site for a picture of a lens.

Here is information from the forementioned Scott Benjamin site: Rare Last One Left 18'' Neon Globe!!! Gulf Oil Corporation, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Very Rare Gulf 18 Inch Neon Globe!!! Last one we have left! This globe was found with four other inserts in a salesman display case made by the Neon Globe Company, Norfolk, Virginia, circa around 1933-1934 as best we can determine. Few 18 inch inserts exist. We have made several 18 inch frames with neon that look similar to the originals. Shown here with the new frame side view. Insert is $1650.00 plus $800.00 for the frame with the neon. I give up on figuring out the HTML code. Here are links to images from Scotts website of the globe: http://www.gasglobes.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=2013&g2_serialNumber=2 http://www.gasglobes.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=2009&g2_serialNumber=2 [This message has been edited by chadhaas (edited 04-04-2008).]

Here is a scanned photo out of Petroleum Collectibles Monthly showing 3 Pure 18" neon globes on pumps. The photo is on page 23 of this month's issue. The quality of the image isnt the greatest, but it does go to show that these globes were actually used on pumps.

Hello Everyone, I recently came across this posting...I have an original neon globe in the original "salemen" case..from what I understand, it was used by the salesmen to go to their customers and present the globe...it works and is in excellent condition...I have 16 pictures of it along with many other globes on my website: http://sellinmy.com/petro.htm....if anyone has any information on this globe I would surely appreciate it....thanks..Charlie

Hey everyone, I'm new to this kind of interaction and it has been brought to my attention that the link I left on my 1st post didn't work...Sorry about that...my website is: www.sellinmy.com then click on "other items for sale" then click on "petroleum collectiables" and that will get you to the pictures of my neon globe and the rest of my globes.... Sorry, Charlie
