That looks like one of those floor starter switches. I had an old truck that I had to replace the switch like it.

I DOES LOOK LIKE THE TOP OF THE STARTER MOTOR ON MY '53. YOU'D STEP ON THE FLOOR BUTTON SWITCH AND A SPRING LEVER JUST BEHIND THE STARTER WOULD PUSH ON THE BUTTON ON THE LEFT. ON THE RIGHT SIDE TOP IS FOR THE BATTERY CONNECTION.

Farm tractors used them for years after they stopped using them on cars & trucks. The contact not showing has to be smooth & even or they just won't get the job done.(started)

These same switches were also used for police cars too. To actuate a sirien, one put their foot on the toeboard and momentarily activated the sirien ......... Ed Shaver

It was common for the garage service station to give you your old parts in the new boxes to show they did replace the part. Unlike the "organized crime" shops now, Yes we rebuilt your transmission in 20 minutes trust us......

Rick, it is metal. A little rusty looking in the photos(check out the lid), a nice find.

Rick, it is metal. A little rusty looking in the photos(check out the lid), a nice find. I have several similar NOS items and all are cardboard with metal lid top and bottom, to open you pull a string about 3/4's of the way up. Never saw an all metal one.

I know some unscrupulous mechanics would take the used part off, install the new one, and resell the used one in the box.
