Has anyone ever seen a Mobiilgas pump plate like this one?
It is the standard size and shape of a I.R.-sign from 46.53, but has black edges and text - and no date?
Would it be a sign that was made this way by mistake, or what do you think?
(I am NOT accusing the seller of enything wrong!!)
Hers the link to the auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/1950s-MOBIL-GAS-STAT...1QQcmdZViewItem

thanks,
Claes

I got my catalog for the Glen Zirkle auction and was amazed at all the different Mobilgas pump plates this guy had. I believe the one you are looking at is one from the "West Coast" according to the auction catalog. I am NOT an expert at all, but this sign on ebay looks ok to me. Remember, there were alot of sign mfgs. in the day and different companies and regions used different or local sign companies to make them. Anyone else with an opinion feel free to chime in.

Roger, west coast is what I first thought, but, the plates from General gasoline does have another shape of the "hooks", and also spell out the word "gasoline" in red below Mobilgas or SPECIAL. SPECIAL should also be in red, iirc.

Admittedly not a sign expert, but I've pulled quite a few pump signs off of pumps that were the same color combination/look.

The more I look at it, it appears to be blue (I asked the seller but he didn't answer that). In that case it looks like a standard I.R sign without the date and with wrong color of the SPECIAL text. I also asked about the corner of the sign where the date normally show.
My question was if there was any sign of paint or repaint in that corner, and the answer was "none that I can see". If you make the picture larger, it sure looks repainted (over the place where a repro sign has the licensing info). My conclusion is that it is an older reproduction.

I'm going to throw in with Frank, on this sign. Plus, the guy has 60 negatives.

Looks like I got overriden on that one. Shows you what I know. Thanks Butch and Dick for your opinion, thats what this forum is about. I would have been fooled on this one big time. I hope the time does NOT arrive when even Butch and Dick can't tell the difference. I change my vote for REPO now!!!!!!!!!!

No problem Roger, I was suspect when I bought it years ago mainly because of the Mobil oil on the back but it was reasonably priced so I bought it anyway, over the years a lot of people have looked at it and it has been 50/50 on the opinions, great conversation piece though...Frank

I've seen this sign with "licensed by Mobil Oil Corporation" on the bottom right border. Looks like in one case the verbage was chipped off and the other was probably painted over. A REPO!!!
