It's too bad they are now repopping this Mobiloil bottle holder sign, ebay item 250778840850 . I was pretty excited at first to think I was the first looker at the $200 buy it now, but when I seen the location I immediately thought it was probably junk. I KNEW it was junk when I seen the size listed as 12"X12". Anyone in the know knows that the original signs are not that large. The seller is also listing some other fake Mobil signs, the first repros I've seen of their designs. (item numbers 250778840166 and 250778839782 ) I know the originals of those are extremely rare. The only real one I've seen of the one design with the large Pegasus special can (250778840166) was in the old "Company of the Month" on Mobil done by Richard years ago. The other design may be completely fantasy, I don't know. (the one with the flat sheild logo can.) Unfortunately a newer collector might get taken on these....so new collectors be aware. Darin

...now, WHERE have I seen that Texaco Aircraft sign before??
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

I agree Dick. I just can't believe people are buying this *****. Looking at the past auctions I seen some pretty crappy looking repros... They aren't even close to professional in my opinion, nothing that would have been produced in the 1930's or 40's for sure. They didn't do sloppy work then. That oval Gargoyle is just a wreck! It looks like my 3 year old nephew helped create that one. Darin

That sign with the Mobiloil Special can is just stupid. Why would a company design advertising that shows their oil being poured on their company logo???

Richard, even though this sign above really looks - and is - a fake, I don't think it is so stupid ;-) There is actually a sign just like that showing the earlier gold version of Mobiloil special. Rex had one and it is shown in the old Mobil COTM. It's on page 2, and it is the real deal, I'm sure. I have actually seen it on several pictures of Swedish gas stations so it may very well be a sign only used outside of the USA? I could post a picture of it, but rather give the link, as this post is about fake signs - wouldn't want to make things unclear. http://www.oldgas.com/shoptalk/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000993-2.htmlbr Claes ps sorry, I see they have repro'd the gold can sign also - I post comparison pictures in the new album ds.

Darin, the bottle carrier sign is 8x8, but I believe there is also a 12x12 version that was mounted elsewhere. Both serif and like this, sans serif. Think it is listed in the Mobil collectors book. But I am sure this one is a repro. br Claes

I looked through the "Mobil book" and from what I remember they were only 11 X 12's, which would match the other pump plates of the same design. I'll have to take a closer look myself, but thanks for posting the link to the COTM that I was referencing in my original post. You can see an OBVIOUS difference in the quality of the signs. Thanks Claes, Darin
