Thank you. Is there any reference material that can help me make better choices in the future.

Guide To Gas Pump Restoration book.

This book is a very good reference for pump plates and color standards for correct globes and dates and sizes of pump plates.

seller stated

This style of sign was in use between 1923 and 1934. Sign measures 11.75 inches across.

so this is false

Have to be careful out there...to many dishonest sellers lurking on e-Bay.

A quick search on e-Bay for "12" Esso porcelain sign" would have brought up other listings correctly listing it as a repro.

Plus, a lot of these early repros were made in the 70s and 80s, so just sitting around that long will make them rough enough to appear original.

Good oil cans don't wait for people, people wait for them.
