Savex; I'm not sure if you have read this COTM thread, about the Union Oil Company? It is from 2004 and most of the images are gone...

But, there is still some great info about the Union Oil Company of California in it.

I've managed to acquire a few Union artifacts over the years. This picture is on the inside
cover of the June 1923 Union Oil Bulletin. At that time Union had over 400 stations.
According to the Union history book, the "Speed and Power" signage was still in use in 1930.
Union's 76 gasoline first went on sale in January of 1932. Union's researchers had come up
with the highest octane that could be manufactured at that time and decided it should have
a "revolutionary" name. The Spirit of 76 slogan was intended to refer to the American Revolution.
