I picked up this Lion sign this weekend at an auction. It is convex, like a globe lens, measures about 16 inches across. It has real heavy porcelain and a greyish black back. Has anybody seen this style sign before? Is it real?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Ryan the back would be concern for me,as you would think it should be first color porcelain, white. Sounds like you have your concern also.
Pierce made a truck delivery sign 14 and 1/2 but it had the white border flat for mounting. Wonder how Lion used this one?
Cool sign I'm a Lion fan,we need a Lion expert!
Joey AKA coke n stuff collects lion and could probably help you out.
I am no Lion expert Ryan but 99.9% sure its just a made up sign that might be 6 months old...

I could see that if it was a flat sign. Why in the world would anybody repop a convex sign?
Could it by chance been cut out of a larger sign? The chipping around the entire perimeter makes me ask? Chris
There are a lot of these Convex signs being reproduced in Germany & Canada
Convex Signs
Here is your sign when it sold on Ebay last February
Convex Lion Sign
hahaha, that is the sign for sure! Good thing I did not pay alot for it, LOL
Thanks for the help everybody!
Very few convex porcelain signs were made originally for the North American market with the exception of Coca Cola buttons. Out of about 500 signs in my collection the only original convex porcelain sign that I have is a Mercedes Dealership sign.
Man,,, that face.... looks more like a llama to me.
There are several convex fantasy signs on Ebay all the time. Dave
I was hoping the face thing was the way Ryan took the picture. Not any in better in ebay auction. Looks like a mad rat with muscles on a bad hair day.
So here is the story on this sign. I was working at my cabin on Saturday and my dad called. He stopped by an auction and saw this sign. He sent me a picture on my phone, but it was not all that good. I told him that I was suspicious that the sign was not authentic. I gave him a number to not go over as a gamble, and we got the sign for under that. Glad I did not spend good money on it! It is not the first time I have been taken on a sign, and it will not be the last, LOL
Unbelievable prices are being paid for those signs! What a bunch of dumb a,,,es!
I have a BMW I believe to be original, also.
European signs were often convex, especially before 1950s.
I have several original Swedish signs that are convex, including Mobioil, Shell Fotogen (Kerosene), SHELL bensinstation, Texaco Bensin och Motoroil, Essolube Motor Oil,
AGFA film, Persil...
In the old days the shape was often hand made with a hammer.
I am sure this is different for many markets
