Hey Guys: Bought this 117 some months back and began researching what I had but being a newbie came up short and need help from the experts. My questions are:
1) The pump has a one piece cast top and I think cast skins (almost 3/16" to 1/4" thick). The only pumps I found like this had external pumps. Do I have something rare?
2) The ID Tag doesn't have a model #?
3) It's missing the globe holder and was hoping someone had a picture of a top like mine with the globe holder.
4) Is there a way to know if this had a valve and dry hose or a wet hose?

I'm sure I'll have other questions as I try to get the parts to complete the pump. I love the patina and plan to leave original. Appreciate any help, Thanks, Sterling
PS I'm a lurker and would like to thank O. G. and it's member for the wealth of knowledge I've received just by reading posts. SP

Cast skins are the norm,on external and internal frys, they differ only on back side skin as externals houses the bracket for pump. dry hoses where converted to wet hoses so either way would be correct. Someone with more smarts then I can date your pump by base and decode your tag.

I have never seen a top like yours and I have seen a great many Fry pumps. If you fool with Fry pumps long enough you will see so many configurations and variations that you will dumbfounded. I can send you a parts list and schematic if you like, but it will not show your cast parts. Your conduit has the early coupling which I have only seen on Fry 17s. I have never seen cast skins on the bases with the square bottom doors. Does this mean anything ? Absolutely not. LOL Good luck and let me know if you want the schematic. Dave

Thanks for the response Loyd & Dave. A schematic would be great Dave I will pm you my address. I assume if you've never seen this top it is rare? Have you seen any I.D, tags like mine without the model # and can you date the pump? While researching I found 17's with cast top but no 117's.
Thanks Sterling

Your tag has a 9/23 pat. date assuming its orginal tag it puts your pump produced after. According to Jacks book 117 with positive stops first produced 1924. What it doesn't tell is how many years they produced it.

they made them a long time, the # on my 117 is 350,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! p.s. cast skins are not the norm.been in pumps since 1984 never seen one. charley

I stand corrected not the norm for 117 but for 17. We should start a fry section on Oldgas for never seen before. As Its been said before as these were updated and sold to farmers and mom and pop business parts was parts. Add the wayne rush conversions and it gets even more confusing.

Thanks Loyd & Charlie. I took a magnifying glass & the measure # is 27848. I'm still hoping someone has some info about the cast top.
Thanks Sterling

Charlie,

As for dating pumps the best source is the Blue Book as long as the company was still in business (Fry wasn't).

Years ago while I was really researching gas pump companies I once talk to a woman whose's father owned a gas pump company. She told me that when they put the numbers in the "Serial" number they always started with 30,000, this way it would appear that the company had made many more pumps.

As soon as I get this damm gas pump book printed I was going to start a new project, I am and will be trying to accumulate as much information about the Fry 17/117/171 whatever pumps. I already have a large file of information. I will be asking the guys to send me a picture of the pump and what the original ID tag listed for the Serial Number. My goal will be to try and determine when all these changes were made.

It most likely uses the same globe holder as a cast top 17

Charley, I think the skins are cast because of the thickness. Are pressed steel skins 3/16" - 1/4" thick also or are there other ways to tell? Thanks, Sterling

pressed steel skins are .160 thou of an inch not quite 3/16 but close. i have heard the cast ones were real thick where they lap over charley

Hope this my help, my base is cast but looks a little different than yours. Metal is thick on the body but I'm pretty sure they are stamped, same style couplers on the conduit and the top is also cast. This is an external pump so the back has mounting brackets with the pump.
