Hello all this is my first post as a new member.

I have been looking around for a while a have been having a few problems finding my answer's. I'm a military vehicle collector and have been wanting to build my own refueling island now for a while to my home stead and collecting.

I have been trying to find a few pictures of refueling island on army bases but haven't been able to find anything other then pictures of refueling trucks and refueling trailers.

So I found a couple adds for the tokheim fuel pump model 48 that was used for in just about every application in the 60s and 70s so I figured that might be a good point to start with.

What is your guy's thoughts? Must of my tricks are 1963 to 1971. So I would like to stick with something that was in service dearing the same time frame.

The 48 was actually introduced in 1956. As you mentioned, it is a commercial pump and was for private use, farms, fleet owners, places where only the number of gallons pumped was necessary. It was capable of pumping 10 gallons per minute.

While I was in the Army Corp of Engineers (1955-1958), and a few times worked in the motor pool I cannot remember what type of pump was used to fuel our trucks. Pictured in my Gas Pump ID book is a pump made by Wayne and used during WWII.

If you intend to use this pump you might have some problems. Finding parts is almost impossible and Tokheim went out of business in 2003. Getting a permit to put a tank in the ground is also difficult. You might consider just painting it khaki green.

That was kinda my plan. Was going to do a pair of above ground tanks. Two 250 gal tanks and just run a 4" pipe in the ground and run two 1.5" fuel rated hoses is side of the 4" pvc pipe over to the fueling island. Basel gravity feed to the pump and then the pump will just have to lift it a very short distance to the fuel tanks of the trucks. Keep it fairly simple. Basel a small pole shelter over the top of the pumps and hoses to protect them some. Sand blast and repaint the pump housings semi gloss o.d. green. Add some white lettering saying "US Army." Add "For official use only" under the US Army and the put MOGAS on top of the ethanol free gasoline pump and DIESEL on top of the diesel pump.

What do you think Sim?

Thank you for your service as well Sim. I was a government contactor for the US Army Corp of Engineers a few years back for about four year myself.

Plus with the basic style of the outer gas pump body, if down the road I needed to update the guts of the unit to a new modern style pump it wouldn't take much to modification to change things around on the inside to keep the out side looking original. But only I and those how follow the post would know about the changes to the inside of the pump.

Well I have found two pumps and purchased both of them. First one is being delivered on Saturday and the second one I will be going to pickup in two weeks. I'll post pictures as soon as I have them in hand.

Well got my first pump, almost completely. Definitely in great shape compared to some of the trucks and other pieces I have brought back to life. It's got the wrong pump nozzle on it. Will have to sores the correct stainless steel one for this one and the next one. Also missing the hose and a few piping pieces. This one was originally white then repainted red. Not sure what the original sticker was but I plan to do a little bit of research to hopefully determine the original oil company that sold it.

Hoping to possibly see if it can be but back to full operations shortly. Here's a few pics in the mean time till I start to take it apart for rebuild and rework.

Well I just couldn't wait to work on it so I started cleaning it up already. Got all the dust off of the numbers and polished them back up a bit. Got the counter turning smoothly again. Sprayed a little Super Lube on all the gears and counter shafts. Pulled the side cover plate off of the pump body. The gasket stayed intact but will be replaced at the point in time well before it hits service again. Lubricated the inside of the pump and reassembled it. Lubricated the electrical motor. Made up a testing power lead for the motor. Then plugged it in. No sparks, did use multi-meter to test and make sure that the body wasn't some how charged with electricity. It wasn't, good sign. Flicked the switch rod down and LIFE it works again. The wires coming from the motor will end up getting replaced while I have it all taken apart for sand blasting and repaint.

But for now it's all but back together and stored away under cove at my shop. Still need to find new glass and weather stripping for the glass but I'd say I'm off to a great start.

Hey Jack Sim, when where a model 86 pumps made that match the earlier model 48s?

It seems that every day, while searching for information such as you requested I find a mistake in my existing gas pump book. The pictures shown on page 290 for the 86 are incorrect. Will straighten this out tomorrow and give you the correct dates.

Found this flipping threw some old stories from Veit-nam war. Thought I would post it up. It's not a tokheim but it still a military fueling island and I think it's a Gasboy pump.

I haven't been following all your posts, but I just want to let you know if you intend to put anything into the ground such as a pipe to carry gasoline you will need a local/county/state and possibly a federal license to do that. Things are tight today when it comes to putting in tanks or anything that carries gasoline.

Yes I've noticed that quite a bit. I've been talking with my local zoning officer about what is allowed and not allowed, as well as what he thinks zoning vartan wise I could apply for. I've actually come up with two different ways to make the island possible that he thinks one would be fine and the other definitely won't be a problem. The no problem route it above ground tanks trailer mounted or in a bunker style retaining area with over head supply lines to the island. The other is again trailer mounted or above ground bunker style but running a piece of 8" diameter 3/8" thick steel pipe with 90* elbows at each end, coated in a linex style product inside and out to fully prevent the steel from rusting away basically and run pipe over the bunker wall to the island threw the just below the surface conduit way. The zoning officer thinks this will fly just fine as long as I have the local EPA inspect it yearly or bi-yearly in accordance with how we (my lawyer and I) write the various request. Sence its privately be used and not publicly he doesn't think it will be a problem sence I'll be adding manually ball valve at each tank and the valve will be closed while not in use. With this thinking and some simple volume math of two 1 1/2" fuel supply hose is side of the 8" pipe, the pipe should be less then half way full of diesel and gasoline even if both supply hoses burst open while not in use. Now of course if the valves are open then that math doesn't fly not even 3/8". But that's the two we currently have in the works. A possible third is above ground drive over channel that is more like a speed bump on one lane with two fuel rated hose running threw it. A cross between both ideas.

Again nothing has been built or blueprinted yet because I most definitely want no issues on the tail end. I will only start building the island after all my ducks are in a row and the government is happy with the plans.

I'll try and get some pictures up of my current refueling trailer and setup for you guys in the next couple weeks. This summer has been extremely busy work wise for me so not a ton of progress on the project yet. But I did get two 86s and one 48s pump. And I'll post pictures up soon as well.

Oh and Jack this picture is for you. My newest truck added to the running and working fleet. 1963 Kaiser Jeep M51 Gasser dump truck. Hoping to restore him (Mason) back to Korean war colors.
