I thought these signs were fake also, because there on ebay every day in excellent condition all dated the same 1948 They sure must made alot that year and never used any of them.

OK guys hate to rain on your parade, but someone HAS reproduced these signs, they are dated 1948. There was one at Mason-Dixon last year that was bought off ebay, and after close inspection was determined to be a fake. The person who bought it is one of the premier Texaco collectors and was showing it around to show everyone what the repro looked like. At that time he was trying to return it to the seller, and I don't know how that worked out.

So how do you know it is fake? What do you look for? What was he looking at? I always wanted to buy one of these but................? With my luck I would buy a fake.

Ok I just learned something today. The one pictured was on ebay & did sell for $175.
Posted By: Gas stuff.com Re: Texaco, Real or Fake?? - Sun Dec 06 2009 03:10 PM
If I remember correctly, the fakes are too light, althuogh these were made in aluminum the fakes are still too light, also there was someting about the holes.Thats all I can remember right now.

I dont always get scared of a sign that alot keep showing up, I have been going to Brinkman sales for over 15 years and he has stacks of the same signs that are original. Plus why would you take the time and expense to do a double sided tin sign that brings aroumd 175.00. ? I to would like the know the difference.

here is one that was sold by ebay seller "artjack" on 11-22-09...Artjack has been featured here on this site before....

Here is another that was sold & i really think this one is real & right ...LOL
http://cgi.ebay.com/1936-double-sided-te...=item53de57fd1a

i am not afraid to buy an nos sign that keeps showing up either however there are guys out there like t-ray who will make anything in a heartbeat if he can make $50 or even less......Bruce Haddle has been repoing 1000's of signs for at least 20 years [ triple aaa rootbeer, camel cigs. etc etc. etc) & none of these signs have dates..\ some are embossed & made with original dyes & you can buy them for under a $100.......

I also bought one of these off ebay about three years ago thinking it was real. But mine is dated 1952 and also says made in USA on the bottom left, and the holes are the place on the one in the picture also I don,t think my is real ether.

I see where "artjack" is buying items from "treasureray". This seller must be extremely lucky, keeps finding 1940 Pepsi door pushes and each was in the original 67 yr old box ("that needed to be thrown away"). Also keeps finding "rare" Dr. Pepper license toppers. I wish I had that kind of luck.

ON PAGE 59 IN THE TEXACO COLLECTOR'S GUIDE IT MENTIONS A WHITE OUTLINED "T" LIKE THE PICS ARE IN THE FIRST POST. DARRYL'S SIGN HAS A BLACK OUTLINED "T". WERE THEY BOTH AVAILABLE IN THE 11 X 21" SIZE? THE HOLES LOOK TO BE PRETTY MUCH IN THE SAME PLACE ON BOTH.

WOULD LIKE TO SEE GOOD QUALITY EXAMPLES OF BOTH SIDE BY SIDE SO I KNOW WHAT'S DIFFERENT ABOUT THEM.

KNOWLEDGE IS GOOD!
Posted By: HI-OCTANE Re: Texaco, Real or Fake?? - Sun Dec 06 2009 04:12 PM
Mine also is a white out line T which makes sense for that year of 1952 and is 21'1-2 by 11' still think is a repop.

What I know to day I would stay clear of those Texaco oil rack signs, unless they were the porcelain ones, only seen one or two of those sense I been collecting. and they were in pretty bad shape.
Posted By: Tankar Re: Texaco, Real or Fake?? - Sun Dec 06 2009 05:47 PM
On page 72 of the book tour with Texaco it shows the rack with sign, the hole placements are in the same location as mine and tin as well? I dont know????????? I sure hope the repops are aluminum and thats how we can tell.

I did not buy the sign, just saw it on craigslist and thought it might be a good topic.

Ok The same one was on Ebay less than a week ago with a buy it now for $175 & was gone in a day or two.
Posted By: Old Racer Re: Texaco, Real or Fake?? - Tue Dec 08 2009 11:17 AM
Quantity is definitely not an indicator. Several years ago I bought out a bulk dealer and had 89 NOS porcelain Mobil pump shields in the boxes from 1948 and 1949, as well as 10 NOS license toppers, etc. I had someone contact me an accuse me of selling repops because I had so many shields and I was selling one a week.
Does anyone know whatever happened to “Black T” Doug. http://billstexaco.com/default.aspx
I would think if anyone would know a repop Texaco sign from the real thing, he would.

Check out item # 270498024985 on ebay. Puretex is selling 7 which are original. This guy is one of the biggest Texaco collectors out there. This one happens to have a white outlined T and the others have a black outlined T. A bunch of different dates. There must be a ton of these signs out there. I have one at my office. I'll have to look at it tomorrow. I bet this guy knows the answer to real or fake.
