I posted my "keeper" Roman Column in showcase a little while ago and I have a couple questions I was hoping maybe someone could help me with. First off, this Roman, like all others I've owned, was missing the drain-back handle that houses the barrel lock. I bought a beautiful cast reproduction from Scobie, but I don't have the barrel lock. Has anyone ever found a suitable replacement for these? Or does anyone have one or a lead on one for sale? Second, does anyone have a picture of what an original nozzle looks like? I believe the nozzle must have been a bananna-type nozzle of some sort that fit in to the hole just to the right of the conduit cut-out. Any help would be great...as I'm keeping this one I'd like to go the extra mile on the restoration.

This is the section I'm talking about. The serve valve handle is on the left, the cut-out for the conduit is in the center, and the round hole to the right must have been to facilitate hanging a nozzle?? I can't see any other place on the pump for a nozzle hanger to be. Any experts willing to enlighten me??

The picture of the 490, 492 & 492F on page 318 of my Gas Pump Identification clearly show the hole on the right is the nozzle holder. My literatue on this pump does not indicate what the hole in the middle is for.

I believe it should take a bananna nozzle with the little wings near the tip, I couldn't find one so I got the big one from Gas Pump heaven and it worked perfectly..Frank

Frank - I was thinking it must be a bananna nozzle as well. I don't know if you have Bob Lee's book, "10 Gallons for a Dollar" or something like that, but the black and white photo of a 491 seems to show a bananna nozzle being used as well. I've been told there was also a nozzle holder/support that attached to one of the bolts in the middle of the scroll...ever heard of that??

Anyone ever come-up with a solution for the missing barrel lock??

I have not heard of that one, I have some pics of the pump on the puter at home, I'll look when I get home and see if it shows in any of the pics...Frank

It's a banana nozzle, but has a groved ring where it fits into the nozzle holder on the pump. I think Scobie made some of these awhile back.

I copied the nozzle that Glenn Thompson once had and that the Cheese ended up with. It was used on the Wayne 480 as well. Wayne used the same bracket on the 492 that they used on the 480. It does NOT have tabs or a hook.
Brian was correct in his description. Contact me if you need more details or a photo.

P.S. I have conduit for the 492 but not the locks. I tried a year or so ago to make them but gave up. Find a previsible Wayne with a locking handle. The same barrel lock was used!

I thought I had your catalog memorized! I don't know how I missed your listing for the original style nozzle. I knew the barrel lock would be difficult. I've heard that Wayne also used the same style lock in some of their oilers?? I'll have to keep my eyes open. I'll be in contact. Thanks.
