I dug this sign up in Oklahoma and was wondering if anyone could tell me any information about it, age, etc...
Thanks,
-Payton
The 35 , on the bottom is the date of the sign 1935. Socony stands first Standard oil company of new york. Collectible sign what size is it?
Where in Oklahoma did you dig it up??
It's big... 4 to 5 feet tall and almost as wide. It's double sided and has the flanges (sp?) but they are bent. Any advice on bending them back out straight without hurting them & any advice on how to treat the rust so it doesn't spread? This thing was in the ground (clay) since at least 1968.
It was at my grandmothers... S Central, Stephens County, Oklahoma
I would not recommend bending it back you are likeky to break apart the porcelain, as far as cleaning something as simple as bar kerpers helper and some elbow grease.
Thank you so much Lucky's... I want to make sure I don't mess up the sign or the value, and I want to make sure it doesn't rust faster now that it's not encased in the ground. You wouldn't believe how hard the red clay of Oklahoma had become around the sign, it took me hours and hours to get it out. It has a couple of areas where the rust is pretty thick... and one of the edges that are bent down is almost completely rust.
Standard Oil Company of New York (SOCONY) and Vacuum Oil Company merged in 1931. That design was used from the time of the merger until 1946 so the 1935 date of manufacture is right.
The porcelain is already toast where the ears are bent. I'd bend them back. Use a big pair of channel locks and don't worry about getting the ears perfectly flat. In that condition it's what we refer to as a barn hanger.
Thanks Lastgas... Does it still have much value as a barn hanger?
Does it still have much value as a barn hanger?
$100-$200.

No sign expert but that sounds about right.
Do you plan on selling it?
It has a lot of sentimental value, so I don't plan on selling it. My cousins and I used to play/slide on it all the time when we were little.
Although, it does look a lot better in person than in the pics.
Keep digging around!!!!
Get out some metal detectors...
Good Luck!
Id say $ 200 out of it easy.
Keep digging.... Get a metal detector!!!! Where there's one there might be more!!!
I KNOW THIS IS SOCONY BUT IT SHOWS WHAT CAN BE DONE WITH A BARN HANGER SIGN.
Great job with the Socony sign! Thanks for the advice, I can use all I can get.
WOW.... What a great story! Looks like a metal detector's in my future as there could have easily been more signs thrown out when this one was. It was almost 1/2 buried when I was a little kid, and it had not been on a slope it would have been completely buried. Wish me luck!
id say scott is just right on the price...not much value in that condition, but still a cool old sign. would like 1 myself if anyone near indiana has 1?? thanks chris
I must be the minority, as I like them in this condition! Its what I prefer. Not to say I wouldnt take a mint sign, but I love a sign that shows age and character. I wouldnt try to restore it at all.

WITH THE SIGN I RESTORED ABOVE, I LEFT THE OPPOSITE SIDE IN IT'S ORIGINAL AGED COND....BEST OF BOTH WORLDS! LOL!
Paint on porcelain is just that, Paint on porcelain.
CHEAP YET VERY EFFECTIVE!
