Hello-

I am trying to find out where and when the first filling station in Massachusetts (purpose built or just a pump added to an existing business) may have come into being. I have an unverified story that the station was attached to a roadside sandwich/barbeque stand along MA Route 28 (AKA the Old Essex Turnpike or South Main St.)in Andover, around 1900. From what I have discovered, this would be +/- 5 years earlier than the stations in Chicage and Seattle currently vying for the title of oldest gas station in America.

Any information or suggestion on who else to contact would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to contact me directly at AGrilz@andoverhistorical.org
