Just looking at the Glen Zirkle auction.Where are the Shell signs?? Is he keeping them or perhaps previously sold them??

The reason is the auction company is commited to bringing top dollar for the consigner, and top dollar is more easily realized the closer the auction is held to the central U.S. I don't care for it but I can certainly see their point.

I wouldn't screw around with this auction anyway, nothing good in there at all,

You guys on the coasts are missing out......and try to find anything on a farm in California good luck.

Collections of this magnitude are best served by being brought to the center of the country. I think it's really smart not to have it a)in the PNW & b)in North Central Illinois where a lot of the Matthews/Aumanns have been held. Doing at Gateway, you are basically as geographically centered as you can be. In essence, St. Louis is a hard day's drive from a LOT OF PEOPLE. Or it's an easy flight for everyone.

Those shell signs look just like the east coast and west coast 15" metal frame globes, totally different for each region.......Les

Gaspower--nice 42 inch sign from the 20's era! Regarding the 6 inch signs,i do not think they were used on truck doors as stated in Zirkles auction,i believe they were used on Salesman's car doors.If anyone knows different let me know.I have heard they were also made in a 10 inch size but have never seen one.

Well, thanks to everyone for the links, I finally got everything to work.
My first impression was, how does anyone get this many quality signs?
What did he do with the bad signs, or did he never buy any?
I have been around this hobby for over 20 years now, but I have never heard of Glen (probably becuase I never collected signs), but can someone clue me in on who he is and where he is from?
One more thing, I plan on going over to the auction on at least Friday, and maybe also Saturday. I also plan on going to Iowa Gas (have never missed on in 20 years), so, if any of you want me to pick up something you bought at the auction and bring it to Iowa Gas, just let me know. My cell phone number is 314-630-9074. You should be able to get me while I'm at the auction. I will be driving a car to Iowa, so I can't bring anything large.
Just bid on the item, pay for it with a credit card, tell them to give it to me, and I'll bring it, or them, to Iowa.

Yes, Glenn is a first class individual. Very nice to deal with. Kinda sad that he's breaking up his collection but it's a chance for alot of people to add a great piece or two to their collections.

The six inch Shell 30's door sign went for $1100.00- not a bad price as i sold a 20's 6 inch for $2500.00 quite a number of years ago.

FYI - I was told that the 6 inch Shell sign was suspect because it had no shelving. The low sale price confirms that the crowd didn't believe it was real.

Could be--nothing surprises me anymore!

Some of the rare and even not so rare signs went extremely high ($26,000 for the Harbor, $3,000 for a Signal pump plate, etc). But for alert bidders there were some bargains, particularly later in the auction, on both days.

I thought that prices were very strong for the most part. As you would expect there were some bargains but in general not a whole lot fell through the cracks.

$26,000 plus 10% for the Harbor Petroleum Products sign, how about that!

I got a few nice Shell items I wanted, didn't bid on the 6" sign and got smoked on some others. Really would have liked to have that Shell Night Lubrication sign and gonna still be looking for a nice regular Shell pump plate.

I was suprised by the pricing relating to condition. This is one of the first times (outside of regional sales) that I have seen low-medium condition items consistently demand healthy prices.

Also, restored signs seemed to bring good money. Not sure I agree with that trend but obviously doesn't bother some collectors.

I was amazed by the restored signs. To see them fetch top dollar was a real eye opener.

The harbor sign went for well over 200% of what I thought it would bring. Its signs like that they make you want to go hunting in the wild to ad to your collection.

I saw quite a few sign sell a fair to low, I think souperhigh got some great bargain on some 30in rounds. There was a red crown or two that I thought went for half the value.

Well, sometimes internet bidders think they got a real "bargain" until the sign gets delivered. Watch out when the "onsite" crowd drops out of bidding and a sign runs up further with the internet bidders. Many times the single photo doesn't tell the whole story on the condition.

He's keeping his pumps I guess....I sold a bunch of globes for him in my '05 auction, maybe he'll sell the pumps later.

Whether at auction live or on the internet if a person wants something and has the money sometimes the final price makes little difference.All I wanted from there I bought with the exception of a couple if items of which a good friend was high bidder.I have done business with Dan and Aumann on internet and in person for years and luckily never been burned yet.
And I know some people on this site just like to start finding fault in others replies and thoughts.

Souperhigh nailed it in their reply. As long as I know the condition, rarity and authenticity of the item I'm bidding on, then price in certain situations does not matter. The Zirkle Auction was a good auction....some items high, some others low. The pricing tapered off after the first day....some items got trapped with too many good pieces and would have gotten more in another auction. Pricing on the rarer items was about right.

I to, was surprised at top prices on restored signs. Maybe finally, quality restoration on signs is gaining respect, like fine art restoration does. I usually do not buy restored signs but I did buy one at this auction that is restored on one side. Good auction and well run. If a sign is suspect as new the autioner will tell the crowd before hand or pull the sign; it pays to have audio on your computer when biding.

I got to talk to Dan for a little bit after the auction last night. Overall we thought some of the pieces brought some strong money....obviously the rare and usual, but looking through the listings, there were actually quite a few bargins to be had as well. I saw several nice pieces that I already own and paid a heck of a lot more for then when I purchased them than what they sold for in the auction. I probably would have purchased more than I did if I were able to attend. Unfortunately the pieces I wanted the most far exceeded my $$ comfort level.

Glenn sold most of his pumps last spring. They pretty much stayed here on the left coast.

I would have to disagree on the restored signs selling high. Let me also add I was glad to see it, as I do not believe a restored sign should even be considered in the same category as an original. I've never had a sign restored so I have NO idea what it costs to have one done.

Obviously I'm not a big believer in restored signs myself. But besides the 30" Paragon and Sunset the other restored items we're fairly cheap. Plus if the Paragon and Sunset had each been original and in excellent condition they would have been thousands more. And in the Sunsets case easily double in price!!

I wasn't there in person so I have no idea how nice the restoration was nor who did it. A lot of them were advertised as professional restoration, so I would assume they looked beautiful. But a 42" Husky Service sign restored on both sides only brought $3000. Hell I doubt you could get the sign restored that cheap. Plus there were several 30" restored signs that sold in the 1200-1500 range (Fleet-Wing Ethyl and Red Crown General Motors) both come to mine. And sgain cheaper than the restoration would cost.

But I agree with everybody else it was like any typical auction.....Some stuff high, some low, and a lot right where it should be.
