I recently picked up on original M & S 80 tall top that is solid (same height as script top) . Does not have script cut out or hole for sight glass. Has anyone picked up one of these in the past, and is it possible to have lettering cut out for script top? If so, any recommendations on the best process. Thanks,

I've never heard of anyone doing it, but I have to think it could be done? You wouldn't have the little mounting posts on the inside though.

I think it would be tuff to do unless you had some form of tracer mill. I have had a couple of these tops over the years.

A 3D laser cutting machine would do a great job. But you would need an original to digitize/scan first to make the cad file in order to program the machine. Wouldn't be cheap.

fast forward to 3:25

I've made ad glass tops out of the solid high tops. It is not easy and requires studs welded inside to hold in your advertisement. In my case, I made plexi-glass GULF ad glasses. They flexed inside the top when studs were tightened. Certainly not for the challenged. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

Thanks for the great ideas. I like the 3D laser cutting machine. Challange would be finding an original top to digitize/scan.

I've got a top you can use for a scan...... 143 miles away.

Thanks Huskybob. Is it a Mobilgas?

Update on my M & S 80 Blank Top. Thanks to Husky Bob for allowing me to borrow his top as a pattern. Was able to locate a 3D laser cutter. Photos of before, after and comparison to original.

Thanks for the comments. I was pleased on how it turned out. Have to pick up the inserts. It is an exact copy of the original so it should fit. Famous last words. smile

...how did you make the pattern for the laser? was the original script-top laser-scanned in 3 dimensions - or was the original traced on paper, scanned and recreated?

I believe the original top was 3d scanned for the CAD program.

There also was a guy on here from the east coast advertising that he could for $175.00 laser them out. Can anyone remember. All my tops are on pumps.
