Are all original Mobilgas pump plates dated? I have one that has a black border around it with no date.

Very few if any West coast plates [Black Boarders] are Dated

Thanks Dick, Without a date, any idea as to the vintage?

I never worried about dates when I was buying them.
I've bought pumps w/ them still attached. GUESSING 40's-50's.

Thanks Dick. I wasn't really too concerned about date either, more curious than anything.

DB is correct on the dating of the plate, and none of the black border General Petroleum territory pump plates are dated.

Very interesting info. Learned something new.

One thing I notice, the Pegasus on this sign is not as sharp as the one I have (IR 47).

Am I correct?

Your's may look more "sharp" if it is a blue border because the Pegasus is outlined in blue

You will also notice the black border Pegasus is not outlined in blue, like the blue border plates.

Outlined Pegasus doesn't look as natural [coloring books where you fill in between the lines].

You make a good point. The "outline" makes the art work stand out, IMO!

However, I still see differences in this pegasus image vs that of IR-47 (rear legs).

Also, notice, the quality of porcelain for pegasus is much sharper for IR-47.

Don't get me wrong, if I ever come across these signs & price is right, I will grab them! wink
