I fairly certain that you can get those at Lowe's or Home Depot. I seem to remember seeing them there at one time or another.
They may not be in the 'lighting' section - but maybe in the outdoor mercury light area.
Or try your local farm supply store.
You see a lot of these things in barns with livestock. They provide light (and to some extent, a bit of heat) for the animals. And if the critter manages to bump against the light, they don't get burned and the bulb doesn't break and get glass on the floor.
They should be like 10 bux.. The fixture and guards are the money parts.. show them a pic and they will know what you mean.. maybe marine lights as well.
I believe that is a standard Crouse-Hinds V-63 globe for their line of Vapour-Tight "Incandescent lumieres." They are common aound here, available at any wholesaler that caters to electricians. The globes and fixtures aren't all that expensive, as I recall. Here's the catalogue section with the specs - see page 12. http://www.crouse-hinds.com/catalog/PDFS/Section1L.pdf
(There's a big difference in price between "Explosion-Proof" and "Vapour-tight" ratings.)
Thanks for all the leads guys. So far nothing has panned out. Waiting on a return mail from Crouse Hinds but all others are much bigger than 3 inches in diameter. I have one coming from McMaster Carr to check out but I do not know its dimensions either but it was only $7 bucks and I was ordering some other stuff anyway so we'll see tomorrow when it arrives. Thanks, Jeff
Your best bet would be to find a local lighting distributor and have them order in the jar(s) for you. I'm pretty sure you can even get colors if you want.
Later . . .
Jim

Thanks Jim, Mine are 3 inches to the outside of the thread. I will most likely wind up replacing the whole fixtures. I have found some reasonably priced that look almost identical but I think the globes ar a tad bigger but with a new base that will work. They range from $10 to $15 complete on the internet.
