The Railroad Express Agency was created during WW1 to expedite railroad shipping and cut through red tape that would slow down supplies getting to our troops in Europe. Like an olden day Fedex or UPS...but railway!
There is an unusual story to this particular sign. I found it bolted to the back of another exact sign. Two things happened. First, the two bolts caused rubbing and porcelain loss. But secondly, being covered by the top sign preserved the color and brilliance of the original porcelain of this sign.
