I happened to stumble(literally) upon an early Fry 17 with external pump and no base. I was just curious as to the value of this pump as compared to a regular or more common 17.

They never had a base...

I have seen quite a few over the years. My understanding is that the ones that have cast iron skins do not take a base, but the ones with the sheetmetal skins do. I have seen two different length of handles for these pumps as well. The shorter one goes on the pumps with the base, the longer handle on the pumps without a base.

Ryan, I also have seen them with and without the base. Value wise ? 25%-50% more ? Dave
Thanks for the responses.

So all these external pump 17s with bases are wrong?
I don't agree. Mine has oval cast iron base with filler tube to the top. What little I know about them is no base is earlier then base model, and they are seldom seen compared to the base models. I'm no help you know all this. You have Jacks books compare then add years of crazy prices.

I think...You will find Fry pumps in almost every conceivable configuration because they were updated constantly due to technological advances and modified by jobbers to keep them in operation. Who can really say what is NOT correct ? They are a "fun" pump. I am still amazed to find them behind barns and out by the road. lol Dave

I have couple of pics somewhere where non base models are on a concrete base, they had to be raised as tanks were under seat add the big wheels and your way on up there. Remember they were for the most part gravity flow pumps early on. Only made good sense for factory to add bases to make them more use friendly.
High jacking your post sorry!

I bought a fry 17 with cast base with correct pump and handle, cast top, sheet metal skins front is normal rear is for external pump the top casting has no hole to fill thru This pump was removed in the 50s and the guy(in his 90s)I got it from has had it in his garage since then Just backs up Dave's thoughts

topic My new fry also works using the goggle search box right hand corner top of page. posted in 2011 works for me don't know why it doesn't for you. If you can't get it pulled up DB states cast iron body with no base 1918 through early part of 1920. Also made mention that a body sold for 2 grand at show in 2010.
