Hi, I'm new to this forum, I have a Dupont paint sign that I was wanting to get some information on it. Its double sided measures 36'' wide and 29 '' tall all yellow with black and red lettering, it reads from top to bottom EXPERT BODY REPAIR AUTO PAINTING DU PONT LUCITE - DUCO - DULUX AUTOMOTIVE FINISHING. my brother pick it up at a shop he worked in back in 1974. was wondering when it came out and maybe the value of it. This sign was made in both heavy porcelain and light metal embossed painted. My tin embossed version Has a "63" date on the lower left. I think that era is accurate for your sign as well. That style sign that was lettered "We Recommend Duco Dulux" was pre-1958. The version with "We Recommend Lucite Duco Dulux" was introduced in 1958. I believe the "Expert Body Repair" version came out a few years later in the early 60s.

Thanks for the picture and the information, my sign is double sided and does not have a date, how can you tell if it is heavy porcelain or tin embossed painted, and what is your guess of value? Thanks

You should be able to see and feel the thickness of the porcelain shelving at the edges of colors on a porcelain sign. The color edges of a painted sign are not very thick.

One tricky issue with this style DuPont sign is that it was also made in a painted version on metal as heavy as a porcelain sign, unembossed. Look to see if the outer edge is white with a black stripe and the field of the sign yellow. That should indicate a painted sign. If the outer edge is yellow, then a black stripe, then a white stripe and the field yellow, that should be a porcelain sign. At least that is the way the signs in my collection are.

Condition is a huge factor in value as a near perfect sign can be worth a great deal more than one that has wear and tear.
