Morphy Live Catalog
Three collection coming together for one great one day auction. Gilmore collection of Alan Darr, Gulf collection out of Houston and another collection from the Seattle Washington area.
Some great stuff there Dan. Rare to see this much Gilmore.
Nice stuff, Never though Alan would sell anything.
So, am I wrong here or is that a 23% commission for all sales or just the internet ? Is there a higher charge for the internet ?
Nice stuff, Never though Alan would sell anything.
The diagnosis of cancer last year prompted him to sell. Unfortunately, Alan died around Christmastime.
FYI, there are quite a few "fake" items in the auction. Can't go by the item descriptions that list them as original. Not sure who researched the stuff, but some of the items are obvious fakes, it's pretty sad...
Did not know he passed away. Sad to hear, his collection was legendary.

Well this is a scary thought!!! If we can't even count on a place like Morphy's to know fakes from authentic.
I would hope if Dan see's the postings in this thread he will look into this and pull questionable items.
Your big ticket items like the signs and globes are good, it's some of the plaques, cans, calendars, desk/paper weights, smalls/trinkets like this Pier 1 Imports looking ashtray, that was overlooked and advertised as original-
"A very nice example of this Gilmore Oil Co. ashtray. Piece retains a fair amount of the original paint and the lion is still intact. A nice aged piece with great patina....
Auction one is on the left. One on right is from ebay...
How about an answer on the buying cost.
What items does everybody thinks that are fakes that myself and John Mihovetz catalog. Don Grimmer and myself met with Alan before he passed away, I had asked him about the Gilmore ashtray he told me that it was real and it was one of the first things he pulled out of a gas station.
So what other items and I will check into it and if you do not want to post call me 217-259-7059.

I knew Alan (RIP) a bit. Never had a bad deal with him, myself. Alan had a lot of cool stuff, aside from all the cool Gilmore stuff. But, he also had fake "red flag" items he claimed original, some he sold off already. With that said, with all his cool stuff, as well as all the other cool stuff offered in the auction, it's likely going to be one h3ll of an event!...
Regarding the ash tray stand, I don't know who made them, or how old they are, but pretty sure they're just old ornamental ash tray stands with a leaping lion. On ebay there are several in current and past auctions. Same company appeared to have made them with dragons, etc...
Globe lots 468, 469, 471 were claimed by Alan to be original, to myself, and other people I know. Did he claim them to be to you? Nice to see they are listed repro.
Other lots with items of suspect...

Anybody going to this auction that is coming through Portland ?
Ok everybody I looked the list of lot numbers over, I didn't catalog the Gilmore items expect for the globes, John Mihovetz did and I think he did a great job.
#18 "it says paper label" I think that says everything
#172 the tin flange sign, I looked at it and it looks good, I will lead paint test it when I get to Vegas and we will see.
#376 Paper weight I have no clue
#382 Paper weight pen I have no clue
#544 Plaster Statue I have no clue
#556 Five gallon can look right to me
#559 States in the descriptions that they are not right
#569 I dont know
#574 says it is a repop
#578 I dont know
#579 looks right to me.
Some of the Gilmore stuff was highly questionable, and when I wrote descriptions, I described them as so, even on the known fake or fantasy items. After spending a week cataloging for this sale, I will admit, that I missed one or two pieces, and for that I apologize.
Auction is this Saturday.
Looking good for the Gilmore collection for sure.
Was told the Gilmore family in attendance was trying to buying all the gilmore stuff ---

Thanks, I must have been looking at the pre-bids. Still some good deals though
Anyone here attended the auction in Vegas? Wish I could have went. I bid at the computer, and won a few minor lots...
For a Gilmore guy, it might be awhile before another one (with so much Gilmore) comes along...

Thanks for posting the pics. That original Gilmore Blu-green visible is really cool. I doubt we'll see one like that again soon.
