frown On this day in 1959, workers removed this giant Red Crown Gasoline sign on the corner of Skinker and Clayton Roads in St. Louis, Missouri. It had 5,600 bulbs, 2,900 feet of neon tubing and five miles of wiring. It was destroyed. It was replaced by a similar sized Standard plastic sign, updated to AMOCO later. The AMOCO still stands there today over a BP station.

Biggest Amoco sign you will ever see, rates right up there with the budweiser sign. When I was in St Louis I would go right by it headed to the historic libaray researching the history of Pierce Oil.

OK, now that took some support structure just to hold it place during a light breeze.

Alas, what else could they have done with the sign--not exactly a wall hanger. laugh

So cool! Too bad it got destroyed.

Even though that station tore the sign down, they have almost always had a big sign at that corner since the early 30's (with the exception of 1959-61). Like Jim said, there is still a large sign there today. There is a very nice four page article about that sign (written by Wayne Henderson) in the July 2017 PCM magazine.

Here is what the sign looks like today. Not exactly the Crown sign it was, but give them a little credit for keeping the nostalgia.
