Mohawk tires sign is on the ground. woo hoo - Thu Apr 21 2011 08:23 AM

It came down easy, with the correct equipment. Its in great condition. Has a 47 stamped on the makers plate. The owner of the tire shop knows for a fact it was hung in 1951. 8 ft long by 5 foot tall. No damage and looks good. I think I will open it and see whats inside.
NEW better, cleaner pics..

Hows the wiring? I am assuming all the ballasts will need to be replaced and the rest gone through, but it looks great inside - no "residents" in there to evict!

Re: Mohawk tires sign is on the ground. woo hoo - Fri Apr 22 2011 02:58 PM

I was suprised too. Never opened since it was hung. Lots of work getting it open. All that was in there was flaking paint. I took the shop vac and sucked it all out. NO bees, or anything in there. The wiring is all incased in tubing, looks pretty good. I am not sure if I should plug it in ??????

Def a Well made sign! Plug it in and listen (make sure radio is off) in a quiet room where the sign is. Worst that could happen is it'll trip your circuit breaker. If bulbs try to light up that's a good sign. laugh Give the bulbs a 1/4 turn in both directions. Maybe remove them as well and check for corrosion...steel wool any muck. Poke around and see how it's wired and to how many ballasts, etc. Narrow down the problems by figuring out which bulbs, ballasts (starters?) need to be replaced. Most ballasts tell you on a label what it's supposed to be lighting. Wondering if they used HO (high Output) bulbs for this sign for colder weather locations. If 2-prongs at the end of each bulb NOT HO's, If 2 prongs surrounded by a black oblong boot...then they're HO's.

The bulbs look like this and the one end is spring loaded so you push the bulb toward one side so it pops out.... info ???

T-12 lamp. Still available at Lowes, Home Depot for a while yet. The ballasts on the lamp will be noisy but that is okay.

I called my electrical buddy. He said put a cord on it and plug it in, I just did, no noise no nothing...

I took the panel of the ballast s sssss and the wiring looks good, but no noise from them at all.

Re: Mohawk tires sign is on the ground. woo hoo - Fri Apr 22 2011 04:33 PM

Hmmmm to me the bulbs look shorter than 4' which means 2 pins on each end. 5, 6 and 8' bulbs have single pins. Didn't think they would be that long. Do the bulbs have a Brand and ordering code on them at one end on the glass? That would tell you what size you need to get as replacements.

Also check the wiring to the ballasts if you can. How long did you leave it plugged in? Did any bulbs light up? or attempt to?

Re: Mohawk tires sign is on the ground. woo hoo - Fri Apr 22 2011 04:42 PM

You'll need to go to a commercial electrical supply for sign ballasts. (or a sign supply place) Take what you have or write the numbers for correct replacements. Looks like there may three. Replace the lamps while your at it. If these are the originals they are probably junk. Are any leaking tar? That is a sure sign of a bad ballast.

Re: Mohawk tires sign is on the ground. woo hoo - Fri Apr 22 2011 05:08 PM

NO tar, no cracks in wires, 4 ballastsss, bulbs are 42 inch and smaller, all single pin, I left it in for 5 minutes, no flicker, no noise no nuttin.

Re: Mohawk tires sign is on the ground. woo hoo - Fri Apr 22 2011 07:17 PM

I have several lighted signs and have never had any luck plugging them in and having them work. I don't think too many shop owners spent any money on maintaining them. Anymore the first thing I do is replace the bulbs and ballasts, if you go that route, replace with t8 stuff, uses less power and is still readily available.

The kid that works at the electric/lighting shop, where I take all my signs and clocks, said he would come out and fix it. I think I will have him come out. I think it will add value if its working !!

Are you sure its a 110 volt item?

Re: Mohawk tires sign is on the ground. woo hoo - Sat Apr 23 2011 06:27 AM

yes I am! Its on the plate on the outside, It got into the wiring lastnight. Lots of broken connections to the lamp sockets. I think I will have it completely rewired and replace all 4 ballast. Safer that way for whomever ends up with it. I would assume people would want to light it.

Re: Mohawk tires sign is on the ground. woo hoo - Sat Apr 23 2011 07:51 AM

Then as porcelain-neon suggested, you should look into replacing the larger diameter T-12 bulbs (1.1/2" diam) with the T-8 size (1" diam) to run the system at a more economic rate of electric.

Re: Mohawk tires sign is on the ground. woo hoo - Sun Apr 24 2011 05:38 PM

Awesome sign. I cant believe the condition is so good on the outside when its been hanging since 1951! Kinda odd that the wiring is corroded when it seemed to be tight enough to keep bugs out.
Posted by: always lookin

Re: Mohawk tires sign is on the ground. woo hoo - Mon Apr 25 2011 10:11 AM

Not really corroded, the wires that go to the lamp sockets are just old and the solder is brittle. So 3 wires just feel off.
