When I was little, I remember asking my mother on a number of occassions where she was going. If she didn't particularly feel like explaining herself, the standard reply was, "I'm going to Scipio." I understood her meaning, but it was years later before I understood the derivation. "Scipio" is a small (very small) town in central Utah (as opposed to the ones in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, New York, or anything to do with a Roman General in the 2nd Punic War), a geographical oddity: two weeks from everywhere (Thank you "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou").

I happened through there a couple of weeks ago. What a wonderful throwback in time it was. Scipio boasts several old (abandoned) gas stations within several hundred feet of one another, two with pump island awnings extending from the buildings like I have only seen in pictures. The pumps are gone from those, but another roadside station's pumps were still in place. How many times do you think someone has tracked down the owner of this place to make him an offer on these old electrics? (See pictures)

Great story, Doug. We always love to see pumps in the wild, still on their original pump island. cool

What a story & those pumps look great!!
If I owned them they would never be moved.
It's hard to believe the add glass is even still there.

Been through there a couple of times...on "the loneliest road in America", so they claim...prowled around and looked at all those stations,,,really neat place.

I went through there about 5 years ago on one of my "turn where ever I want" trips across the country which included Highway 50 "lonliest road in america" , I remember this town well and have a few pics of those pumps. There was a small antique store (very small) about 200 feet down the road, it was owned by the sheriff who drove an old silverado with a big badge on the door (not something you see to often) but it was truly a small town so it seemed fitting. Indeed!

I bought a cast iron doo-hickey-thing-a-ma-jig at that antique store that I haven't yet figured out. The gentleman that sold it to me wanted 5 bucks. I pullled out a credit card, but he wasn't equipped for that. He told me to just drop it by next time I was in town.

What a great town.
