I will attempt to follow in Shawn's Footsteps and put forth a COTM that will share some of my love for Tide Water Oil....
First, before I get ahead of myself... I want to thank Doc... For his splendid work on the Tide Water Billboard banner!
Now... A short background History....
Tide Water Oil, was incorporated as an Oil Company in the City of New York 1887... In approx 1916, Tide Water Oil started selling a single grade of gasoline and a grade of motor oil both named Tydol...
In early 1918, Tide Water "became Big Time"; As the Company purchased the rights and formula to VEEDOL MOTOR OIL....
(I will go into VEEDOL, later)...
With the support of Veedol sales, Tide Water expanded and became known more and more throughout New York and New England ... Around 1936, Standard Oil bought into Tide Water and gained a controlling interest... Through a Company called Mission Corporation.... With the "break up" of Standard Oil... Mission was sold to J.Paul Getty... Getty's ambitions, helped turn Tide Water into one of the greatest Oil Company's in the World...

Except he is Happily Married!
SHE Decorates the House & He Decorates the Garage.
I am not sure if this is real or not, due to size and how its printed I would guess its NOS. but I could be wrong, any idea?
Drew, most likely what you have; Is a "repop" of an original poster from 1933 (an original poster that I've seen was approx 3' x 5') ...
As my photo shows, I have one of the much smaller repops... Alongside an original Newspaper ad from June 2, 1933 and a Veedol magazine ad from the late 50s....
Thanks Bob. It was $15. This one is 22x28. I wish I had the real deal! I still like it though.
Great items, John!!! The European Market; Had many items that I wished had made it to our shores... But thanks to you and others, we do get a great look at items we might not normally see...
Thanks again for posting!!
From 1933: Veedol ad relating to the Admiral Byrd Expeditions to Antarctica:
Also in 1933, Tydol and Veedol were making history, by servicing the Graf Zeppelin when it came to the United States...

John and AL thanks for showing us some "not so common" Veedol items...
AL, when do you "go on the road again"?... I think it is time, I ask my Drs... if it is okay to make a quick "night time rai"...
I mean "visit" to a "Good Friend"... LOL
Good stuff, Al love the 1938 sign
Thought I'd throw my Tydol Ethly wide glass globe out there and ask a question of all you Tydol experts......What would have been the last years that this glass globe would have been seen on pumps? Were they out of use by the time the electrics like the Neptune L-1 and MS/Wayne 80's went in to service? I'd like to build a pump and use this globe, but I haven't got an older clockface pump in the shop yet. Great thread Bob, all you guys make me jealous with all the nice stuff!.....Gary
I'm kicking myself because I should know that cartoonist from the very first post. If my first dad (not stepdad) was still alive, he'd know for sure 'cause he read me all those comics including the Katzenheimer Kids--the comics he grew up with. Is it by the Brownies (my favorite) cartoonist Palmer Cox?
Bob and Alan, what made you both focus on Veedol/Tydol, especially as you're nowhere near the midatlantic region? Is it like the Russians who have more cactus clubs than the U.S. because they are so different from what is local? LOL
Gary, if I am reading Jack's book correctly and looking at the correct photo on Scott's and Wayne's CD... The globe was used between 1935-1941... So well before the Neptune L-1 and the Wayne/MS 80 were introduced...
Nicole, for me... Because as a youngster I worked for Tidewater Oil at a Flying A Service gas Station in the early to mid 60s...
I really started Collecting Tide Water/Tide Water-Associated/Tidewater items a little over 2 years ago..
Before that it was anything from any Company... And I still "pick up" items from other Company's, if the item catches my fancy...
That's what I had gathered also, Bob. I have dug up a few pictures of newer pumps done in that theme, but they would not really be period correct. Oh well, I'll just have to start looking for a clockface to restore.....Gary
Richard(gatorgaspumps) restored this beautiful Wayne 276 in Tidex...
Richard as always, you did a wonderful job with the pump!
Excellent selection of items, Don!

Scarce masonite thermo
There are some nice things shown here to be sure!
I've always liked Tidewater stuff maybe because when I started collecting years ago there seemed to be a lot of it around in Western Oklahoma. Here's a clockface pump with a Tydol metal band globe I found in the attic of a Dodge dealership in 1975 in Altus. At one time I had the two cast milk glass globes as well, but as usual in those days Kyle Moore ended up with them in some kind of trade that I can't even remember now! I don't think Tidewater ever used this particular Bowser pump, but when I traded for it it was already finished in black and orange and I had the globe so . . . I had the decal and ad glass made. I've never seen an original Tydol ad glass that would fit this space plus as you know, early Tydol ad glasses are pretty scarce and don't come up for sale as often as the later Flying A ones.
Also pictured is a Forzol sign that came out in 1926 (note "26" in the corner) with the last series of Model T Fords. Incredibly, this sign was a barn find in 2010 in Middle-of-Nowhere, New Mexico. This particular brand name was superseded by the Model A banner you can see to the left. The brand was previously called "Fordol" and I imagine at some point the Ford Motor Co. made Tidewater stop using that configuration as Ford dealers sold their own lubricants and anti-freeze.
In the second photo (taken sometime earlier than the first) you can also see a bit of an original, authentic paper banner that uses the same image as the reproduction sign discussed above in this thread.
txs a lot Steve for post your awesome pumps!!!that paper sign is a very rare one ,your very lucky to have a original!!!that`s a very hard piece to find,,i`m still on the hunt for your signs so we`ll keep hunting..txs a lot
Alan
i agree with ya Thermoman, that`s a rare thermoneter,,i have one and in fact its my second one since i lost the first one in a fire in my garage with 10 other signs 3yrs ago,,all i can say is have INSURANCE!!!txs for posting,,i will post my thermometers later..
txs Alan
Here are photos of all the Shoebox globes that I know of from the Tidewater/Getty Oil family. The Flying A shoebox globes date from the late 50's after Getty Oil dropped the Tydol name.
The Diesel version of Flying A with the red background is a recent new discovery. There should also be a Kersosene version of this globe.
If you know of any shoebox globes not pictured here please let me know as these woud be new discoveries.
Great post, lets keep the photos coming!
Lonnie & Aaron hop
The Tydol Ethyl in the top right of the 1st picture above is a solid 1-piece milk glass shoebox globe. It is the only one known to exit presently. I know there must be other ones out there.
If you have one let us know as we are always looking to expand our knowledge of known globes!
Thanks!
Lonnie & Aaron Hop

Unbelievable globe!
Good thing the CD is already in my laptop, so I could check to see when the globe was used! I don't know if I could have loaded it after seeing the images!!! I've now got the shakes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
I want to thank every one who has gotten this Month's Thread off to a Flying Start.... I hope that anyone/everyone who has a Tide Water/Veedol/Tidewater-Associated/Tidewater/Getty and Associated item will think about sharing a photo.... Unless someone has contacted Shawn about doing a separate COTM based on Associated Oil... I will plan on adding the Company to this one as at least in my mind the two Company's are "tied" together like........
Peanut Butter and Jelly, Abbott and Costello, Martin and Lewis....

Excellent items db! Thanks for sharing... I don't remember seeing such small metal Tidewater "bands" before... Any idea what they were used for?
My guess is the small metal Tidewater "bands" were used at the refinery to seal 5gal bulk Oil Cans. Once slipped together, they had to be cut to remove. All have different #'s.
On some oil leases, the roads leading in/out were shared w/ other companies & each had their own electric poles.
Couple more that I don't think have been posted yet.
Fantastic globes!!
Thanks for sharing!!!
Ryan, thank you for sharing the photo of the vertical signs!

Seals.
Although they were used for various applications. They were mainly used as Truck Seals. To seal the caps on the unloading lines and dome lids on the trailers. Some states use to require all petrol loads be sealed while in transit. (Some may still reqire that, Illinois was one such state, no longer required). I have a collection of those used by Marathon over the years.

Chuck and db; thank you for filling in some info!...
Thanks to you two and others here on Oldgas I now know what the bands are for.. been wondering for years and years... Was ashamed to ask.... LOL
The older I get, the less painful it is to admit... I don't know.... I just, don't know....
If you have collected any number of Tydol or Veedol cans you have seen cans with the top or bottom completely punched in. Aaron and I have always wondered what kind of device would make a hole like this. Over the years we had seen many cans from the Tydol family that had been opened this way.
A year and a half ago at Iowa Gas a friend showed me this midevil looking weapon and I imediately recognised it as the tool that was used by Tydol to punch holes it their cans. I assume it fit into a larger funnel of some sort and the can would be ramed down onto this hole puncher. I would assume that the can emptied in a few short seconds.
We had covered this in the general petroleum section a year and a half ago but many of you may not have seen it there so we thought we would share it again. Later this week we will get into some of our old photos and post pictures of a bunch of Tydol related globes.
Keep those pictures coming!
Lonne & Aaron Hop
Lonnie and Aaron, that "puppy" is wicked looking, for sure...
I own a few of the cans that were opened and drained by such an "item"... I don't remember seeing it before, so thank you for sharing a photo!!!
now we know the rest of the story!!what a great story it is,,that`s a scary piece,I must say....txs to you guys for filling us in ,,
txs Alan
Aaron, not for Opening the can, but for Destroying the can so it couldn't be refilled w/ bulk/lower grade oil & sold as TYDOL/VEEDOL.
My dads wood working shop is 150 years old you wouldnt know by looking at it but it has 100,000 dolars worth of wood working tools in it. But he likes his signs ruff. For them to look like his shop. This is our only veedol sign. 42" single sided rust.
Jonathan, the sign looks perfect on the building!!! I wish I had such a building for my items!
Man that is cool. Would hate to step on that thing
Oh its embossed cast iron a thin sheet of cast iron though.
Oh its embossed cast iron a thin sheet of cast iron though.
Cast Iron is not Embossed
Here's a more recent pic of my globe shelf. Some ad glass and a few cans. Let's keep this thread going!!
Chad
Excellent looking displays, Chad! Thank you again, for sharing!
Bob, if you look at the ad at the bottom of page 6 in this thread you will see an attendant pressing a quart into a pouring can. Possibly a hole puncher similar to the one that is in Aaron's photo resides at the bottom of the pouring can. I have had a number of early Canadian quarts that were punched out this way. They would sure make a mess pouring if you had to do it freehand. Cheers, Don.
I was thinking of the same advertisement, Don... When I saw the "can opener"...
I hope you all are not getting bored with this thread? As it is time to go to "the Next Phase" of it....
Not bored at all! Next phase lets go .
Thanks to all that has posted this is fun to follow.
A little bit of ASSOCIATED OIL history:
"In 1901 on the West Coast, an enterprising pipe salesman by the name of W.S. Porter persuaded a group of San Joaquin Valley independent oil producers to form an operating group in hopes of selling them pipe for a line that would carry their crude oil from the Kern River fields of Bakersfield north to the San Francisco Bay. In October of that same year, the group incorporated as the Associated Oil Company with Porter as General Manager." (from Royal Petroleum Company of CA website)
In 1905 Standard Oil and Southern Pacific Railroad bought interests in Associated Oil Company of California... By 1909 Southern Pacific owned 51% of the shares and Associated Oil was on it's way to supplying oil not only to the West Coast but to China, Japan and the Western Pacific...
By 1912 Gasoline and Kerosene were in high demand on the West Coast and Associated built their first refining plant. In Jan of 1913, Associated Oil built their first refinery... The plant was called the Avon Refinery because it was located within the Avon section of Southern Pacific Railroad's track system. The site for the refinery was chosen for its proximity to the Southern Pacific Railroad Lines and the dependable deep-water port reached by the Southern Pacific Pipe Line.
Demand for gasoline "exploded" on the West Coast and Associated Oil decided to not only refine gasoline but to sell it in their own stations.... In approx 1918 Associated Oil opened their first gas station in the "Bay area"... By the early 1920s the Company had stations in California, Oregon, Northern Nevada and Washington State...
A few early Associated gas stations:

For those who have not read the COTM thread from 2004 on Tide Water. Here it is....
Since many of those who posted then, aren't around now. I don't feel it is right of me to use their images... But, it is a great read:
http://www.oldgas.com/shoptalk/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000512.html
The current location of the Company of the Month for Tidewater Oil from back in 2004 is in the Best Of Shop Talk archive:
http://www.oldgas.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=100528The Best of Shop Talk is under construction. I put hours in on that when I'm not too busy on the normal issues on the live forum.
Thanks Jim, for the proper link!
I want to thank all those who have contributed so far! I hope the Membership will not get bored with me and/or the thread....
Next Week, I will start the 3rd phase of this COTM...
It will be Tide Water-Associated Oil... Hopefully those who have been kind enough, to share images will also share if they have any items from the merger period?
A few smalls:
Hope you don't mind a nice Girl, Bob - I'm not sure if this one has been shown in the thread before...
/Claes
Don't mind at all, Claes! I don't have much in the way of European Veedol/Tydol items... I, thank you very much for sharing...
I saw this one on ebay germany 170977927496
John thanks for sharing the link to the "Skatergirl sign" it is one I am not familiar with...
Andy thanks for sharing the items, the Veedol can with the Formula Car is outstanding! What product was in the tall light brown can? It is a shape I don't believe I have seen before... I am lucky enough to own one of the banks, thank you for the image...
Now the "star-burst" can is a new one for me... I don't remember seeing such a can with the "TWO" logo on it, before...
OK I'LL ASK. What does the two logo stand for? Thanks in advance.
associated cleaning solvent sign..
Loyd, it is a fair question... But, you will kick yourself when I post it....
(T)ide (W)ater (O)il.... TWO.....
[quote=Bob Richards] Loyd, it is a fair question... But, you will kick yourself when I post it....
(T)ide (W)ater (O)il.... TWO..... [/quote
OK- I'll get the wife to give me a swift kick, she will enjoy that. Thanks-- no stupid questions right?
If one doesn't know the answer to a question... The asking for the answer, isn't stupid "in my book"... Acting as if I know the answer when I don't... that is stupid... (my opinion)
Bob,
To answer your question from above.
"What product was in the tall light brown can?"
It is a tall grease can. It is around 15" tall.
I received another Veedol mechanical pencil today... One I have been looking for, for a few years... It fits nicely into the next phase of this COTM thread, that will start on Monday....
As you can see; In the pencil on the right a Veedol oil can floats in a cylinder of oil... Whereas the pencil on the left (my "new" pencil) the can is much larger and it has the Tydol blimp "floating" in it's cylinder....
One side of the blimp:
The other side of the blimp:
On Monday the Tide Water-Associated Oil Company will be "featured"... I hope that those with items from this Company will share them....
Love the Blimp pen, Great job Bob on this tread and anyone who contributed to it.
One last photo of a few Shoebox globes fron the Matthews Auction event.
Great post, thanks Bob and everyone who contributed!!
Thanks for sharing the images of the globes, Lonnie!!!! Man they are great!!
I ran across this newspaper ad from 1927 tonight:
Time for the next Phase in the Tide Water Oil Company, saga:
Starting in 1937 and finalized in 1938, Tide Water Oil of New York; now under the ownership of J.Paul Getty and his Mission Corporation. Merged with Getty's "newest" acquisition; The Associated Oil Company of San Francisco....
The name of the New Corporation with Headquarters in New York became: Tide Water-Associated Oil Company
Unfortunately, I am not completely sure of how far the two territory's encompassed in the 1930s and 40s... I know that the Tide Water Region included the North East and some jobbers in the Mid-Atlantic States.... The Associated Region included the West Coast and most if not all of the Rocky Mountain States. But, how far East and West did the two Regions influence? If anyone can fill me in on early stations in the Mid-West, Plains and South West I would love to add the info to my "folder"...
Thanks to Bob Dalley and his work on the Museum in West Jordan Utah, I have been able to fill in some of the gaps in my knowledge....
Here is my Erie I just finished. And some signs.

Don't have a whole lot of Tydool, Veedol stuff and the one good sign I have is probably one of my roughest signs in my little collection. But the price was right.

Great job on the months work, Bob. Oh well, they say good things come to those who wait.......great collections everybody........Gary

Keep adding photos AL! Every time you do, I notice another item you have been "hiding" from me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
I received this photo is morning....
It is from 1938 and the Station was located "down the Highway" in Portland,OR...
(sorry about the image... My scanner doesn't like my "upgraded" operating system... So I had to take a photo of the photo)
I added another item to my Associated "paper"collection today off of Ebay... I believe it is from the early to mid 30s...
Also picked up this pinback that ties into the Associated photo and the "football", theme...
No one has any Tide Water-Associated items to share?
If you have an item and it has been displayed by someone else, who cares? It is yours and I know I would like to see it!
It seems that this thread is "losing steam"... So I will move on to the next phase....
In 1954 the Tide Water-Associated Oil Company came to an end. But the announcement didn't "reach" the public until the end of 1955... The "Associated Oil Company" name after 53 years; came to an end. At the same time, the Tydol brand name also came to an end...
This new Company was named "Tidewater Oil" and it's "slogan" really became it's identity...
"Flying A Service" or the shorter "Flying A" became the identity of the new Company; all over the United States...
here we have a few smalls;;ashtrays: fan belt: give away`s..
txs Alan
Thanks for sharing AL!!!
I didn't realize you had so many ashtrays!

Description: .
Bob, I believe that red Tidewater truck you posted was outside of my father-in-laws plant here in Vegas
Really? It would be fantastic, to learn a "history" behind the image... If I remember correctly, I bought a copy of the photo a few years ago... But, know nothing about it...
Jack, by chance can you supply any info for myself and the Membership, about the Driver and/or the Depot?
I know that AL, loves the image.
Love the outdoor setup Nucky!!! Nice early stuff!!!
"It seems that this thread is 'losing steam'... So I will move on to the next phase...."
Well, there are 27 pages...I'm about ready to sell all my Veedol/Tydol stuff.
If we try Seaside, Gilmore, Veltex, and Oilzum we'd probably get 3 pages altogether!!

I want to thank everyone again, who has contributed!!!!
I know that it can be disconcerting at times, to post an image because of some unscrupulous people on the 'Net.
I am seeing some items, that I've not seen before and others that I have not seen in some time!
So again, thank you all for sharing!!!!!
Matt Thanks for adding the pic's!!

A couple "Flying A Service" Gas Stations:
This picture was taken about 1965.
Bob, do you know where the photo was taken? Possibly, in your part of the State?
These possibly, could be the decals on the pumps?...
Thanks to Oldgas, Ebay and some others... My little "Ad glass walls" in the garage and the house shows all; How much I "love" the Tide Water/Tidewater Oil Company's!!!!!!!!!!!!
A new one for me!
Some Tidewater smalls:
flying A window banner..
Well it looks as if this thread has pretty much run it's course...
So I will end it with Getty Flying A...
In 1962, Tidewater Oil decided that they needed money, immediately... As, such the Company decided to consolidate their East Coast Operations and put-out "feelers" to other Oil Company’s to see if there was any interest in their "Western Operations"?
In 1963 ESSO made a bid to acquire Tidewater's interests in the Western US... The U.S. Government balked at this and took Tidewater/Getty and ESSO to Court... By the beginning of 1965, ESSO and Getty(Getty had acquired all interest in Tidewater) lost in Federal Court and the agreement was set aside...
In 1966 Phillips 66 was able to get Federal approval for a take-over of all Tidewater Western Operations... And except for in one small area in the San Francisco Bay Area... The "Flying A" brand after over 66 years....Died without a wimper in the Western portion of the U.S.
In the Northeast; Tidewater/Getty Flying A Stations operated for a couple more years. By the end of 1969, the "Flying A" brand was gone from all advertising... And over 100 years of Oil History, was relegated to History Books and Collectors like us....
1967 Tidewater/Getty Flying A road map:
1969 Getty Flying A road map:
Thank you AL, for again sharing some of your extensive Collection...
You seem to have items from all the different phases of the Company(s)....
I want to thank everyone again who posted in this COTM...
Normally the saga would have been over in 1966 on the West Coast and 1970 on the East Coast.... But in 1975 in the Northern Bay Area; Royal Petroleum Company came into existence with Headquarters in Santa Rosa CA..
http://www.royalpetroleum.com/about_overview.aspxAround 2006, the Flying A Service Gas Stations have come "full circle" and the brand is fulfilling the gasoline needs of those in the Northern Bay Area...
If in the North Bay area and you run across a Flying A Station.. I hope one will stop in and "re-live" a bit of "Gas Company History"....

Wow,
Thank you Bob (and Veedol Al and the rest) for taking the time to share your information and for taking the time to take and share all those pictures of your wonderful collections!
