I never saw one with that fancy lettering before...just the plain block type letters? Must be uncommon?

Is that an original sign with the blank bottom that someone hand painted the lettering on? Looks like it to me.....Probably not in the porcelain.

definitely hand-lettered.

if there were more photos, I could confirm this, but it looks like the reflective qualities of the hand-lettered black are different from the porcelain black, implying it is a different material - probably good old black paint applied with a brush.

whoever did that hand-lettering did a damn good job of it! these days, you can't get that quality out of 99% of people even if they have a computer at their disposal.

...yes, it's hand-painted...there originally would have been a separate porcelain name-plate bolted across the face of the sign, between the two lower-most grommets and above 'distributor'...

I don't believe so. I have never seen anything bolted on afterwards ??? JMTC

...I used to have one of these signs...and there was a mark left where something was attached to the face of the sign...you could see the difference in the porcelain face of the 'keyhole' sign, where it had been covered by the name plate, and hard water stains (not rust) that indicate the edge of something that had been bolted to the face of the sign...the size, shape and location of that 'ghost' image leads me to believe that there was originally a name plate attached there...not 'bolted on afterwards', but at the same time the sign was affixed to the truck door...seems to me that those two bottom holes would be lower, more 'centered' along the left and right sides, if they didn't serve two purposes: attaching the personalized name plate, as well as the bottom portion of the sign to the door...

...but, hey - Texaco's not my thing like Gulf is, so you might be right...

I have never see anything bolted on one either. I have seen these signs with and without the dealer's name.

Gulfiend, I stand corrected you are right now that you pointed out the hole pattern. I've owed dozens of these and never seen one with the holes there. Good Eye, learn something everyday.

Thanks Doug
