It still amazes me that something like this was found on the floor of an old building within the last year. It seems every few months another relatively rare item comes up for sale that was just or recently discovered hidden away somewhere. This should give all the naysayers that think nothing is left out there a bit of hope that it IS still out there to be found!
It should be neat to see where the globe ends, assuming is makes it that far.
Ebay item 390680370614
Darin
Cool globe! A rare one too... Kevin picked one up that was broken into 3 pieces and glued back together awhile back. Really nice globe! Hope someone here can get it...
super rare, cool..
Yeah that is just a few miles from my house too.
Check seller's other items. I had not watched him for a while as he has had mostly movie theater related stuff for the seemingly past couple of years, but in the past he has had a lot of neat and rare items. I have bought from him before also, and he has been great to deal with.
I am curious to understand the psychology of 21 bids already and the end is six days out. Unless one put in an insane number because they would be out of communication, it makes no sense to me to bid ahead. Just running it up like Proxibid also. Why not mark in in your Ebay saves, be there at the end for a rare piece like this and decide what you can afford?
Rob, I am talking to more and more Collectors who tell me they are now "throwing out" small bids on Ebay. Their reasoning is to ensure a Seller; That there is real interest in their item(s)...
The hope is, that if a Seller sees good interest in their item(s); They will be less apt to pull the item before auction end... Based on a premise; that if there is real interest in the beginning, there will be a "rush" in the last few seconds...
Does it work? I'm not sure... For me personally; My Ebay Experience is an: Ebb and Fall, like the tide..... The Tide, during a Hurricane! ..
And, when I'm on a "losing streak"; It seems no matter what. I will get sniped at the end; or the auctions will end early... LOL
I don't know Rob....I've always thought that the people who bid early and often know they really have no chance of owning the item, but like to be able to tell others in the hobby, "Well, I had the high bid on that Texaco globe for a day or two". We all know the serious bids come in during the last few seconds of any auction, which I'm sure will be the case with this globe, there again assuming the auction runs its full course.
You can bet even w/ the small bids they have received several wanting a BIN. Hopefully it will play out to the end.
Anyone want to make a prediction just for the guess of it?
CD says $15K
Wow only used/made for 2 years according to CD. Crazy!!!
I bid on may items early just to see who wins the item.. without bidding you can see that information..
OMG, another CD Expert!
LOL
Oh c'mon dude!! You told me to buy the books so I bought the books. What? Did I buy the wrong books?
LOL
Now back to your regularly scheduled program already in progress. Texaco Chimney Top Globe....
Well, I had the high bid on that Texaco globe for 5 minutes or so.

There are a lot of different thoughts on eBay bidding strategy, just like on bidding at an auction or pricing things to sell at a show. A lot of people at a show tack on an extra 10-20% to the initial asking price knowing that they will probably get a lower offer. It gives them some bargaining room. EBay bidding strategy also has a lot of different thought processes. I will throw out an opening bid on something I like ( remember to copy / paste the item number in the Old Gas search box) at the start of the auction as eBay will send out outbid reminders and item ending soon reminders to help me remember it. Also, no bids can tell the seller possibly not much interest in the item and he may sell it off eBay. many different thoughts on the strategy to use. As for the Texaco globe, nice globe but it does have some condition issues. Should still bring good money
Bob I never thought about bidding with that in mind. Interesting. Darin, when Ebay was older and one knew who it was bidding on something, I know personally some in the hobby that did exactly that. They wanted to be a BIG fish for a while and then dropped off explaining they weren't home or something. Dick I kneel at your feet. With two late twenties kids and texting I thought I knew all the short cuts - dumb but what is BIN?
This globe as you all know will bring big bucks but I think I learned something here. I collect Texaco but won't be involved with this! Thanks guys!
Thanks Wes, I guess I never looked at it that way and it does make sense to me. I have bought a lot on Ebay in the past but now buy from trusted people like Lonnie for globes and whomever for other items they are known for. I sold a lot in the early days but got tired of the changing rules and frankly lost interest. I know race engines VERY well but that is about my only claim to fame
Have a good one guys and thanks again. I learned something today for my 62 yr old brain to remember even being 62 ! Still waiting for his Highness Dick to answer my dumb question
!! HAGD Rob
I mostly avoid E-Bay as well - but I use Auction Sniper for everything I am seriuosly interested in. It bids at last second and you can change your mind and retract snipe before the auction closes.
Ray
At least this is somewhat reassuring that we will get to see what it brings.
Q: do you have a buy it now in mind?
A: Hello, I don't have a price in mind for the globe. I plan to let the auction run its course and sell to the highest bidder. Best Regards, Tom Wilson
BIN = Buy It Now.
Newbie bidders think it means; Bump It Now!
Heck if he dont know how to ship to could be BIN= Brok-in-Now!!!
Wow....nice to see. Even though he talked about it, I think I would have cleaned it up a bit. For that kind of money, I would drive and pick it up and then drive back at 15 mph....LOL
Someone says the CD tells them $15,000.00, I guess in Columbus several years ago one went for $28,600.00 doesn't count.
How will/would it effect the value to re paint an etched globe ? Please some one that exactly knows. LOL
Alex, he might be afraid of Soap & Water!
...I'm thinking he might be worried that the paint would wash off - and rightfully so...anyone who's dug old ACL soda bottles out of a dump know that sometimes the paint doesn't survive washing...
Heck if he dont know how to ship to could be BIN= Brok-in-Now!!!
LOL
Alex, he might be afraid of Soap & Water!
Ok, that's funny. I would think if you started with the white and gently wiped with a wet cloth and then gently touch the red and see what it does. I think it would increase the number of bids. If they are stains and don't come off, I think that would impact the value.
As far re painting, I am not an expert, but I would say no. On the other hand, they do restorations on old paintings and it doesn't affect the value. But, only my opinion, I would leave it alone.
An Old Painting is a 1 of a Kind, but a restoration still will affect the value some, w/o the resto it would have sold for less. The same painting found in it's original pristine condition would have Greatly enhanced the total value, maybe 2-3X what it sold for.
very cool globe and story, glad I don't collect Texaco or I might be broke
why did the globe have a hole in the top? did they light it with a candle?
why did the globe have a hole in the top? did they light it with a candle?
I don't know if it is an urban myth or not...but I have been told it was to help with ventilation. Not sure if that was heat or fumes...or both. No candle.... Black T may have the answer.
When first used there was a concerned about an explosion when the light came on for the globe. They were afraid gas fumes would fill the globe, that is the reason for the vent.
Cool globe! Why not a black T…Seem like being that old it would be.
There are a couple white T one piece globes. But they are the more rare ones...
don't forget to set your snipes,..
tomorrow:
ebay # 390680370614
I think it will hit $15000... Not going off the CD either DB... Its rare and very cool. Plus its almost 100 years old. Good buy.
There are a couple white T one piece globes. But they are the more rare ones...
Here's mine, a milk glass etched, white "T" canopy globe from that era.
Thanks,
Rod
Heres mine and I still haven't started work on it yet. It was broken and put back together with silicone. I plan to dismantle it and reassemble it properly with epoxy.
Its about as close as I will ever get to one and I got a bonus with it---it still had the impossible to find chimney cap on it!! GREAT globe!
Broken or not Kevin, that cap makes it!! Very very cool!!

very nice!! Not many of those known to exist...
Very cool pic!
Is there not other brand examples of this type globe? Texaco could not have been the only brand thinking there was need to vent the pumps, were they? Or were they?

There are many company's who used them. One thing you could do Steve is just put "chimney" in the search bar on Scott's globe CD, and lots of them pop up. texaco, esso, red crown, ETC.
WOW, He has got to be happy now.
And it sure as heck wasn't me!!!
But I do wish mine wasn't broken!

Thank you for the kind words. Many Texaco books do not include Kevin's or mine in them.
It jumped from $9600 to $16650 in the last few seconds! Congrats to the buyer.. And I'm sure the seller is very happy!
Dang!! That is one happy seller!
To each his own, but I don't see that price for the condition it was in.
That is a amazing price paid . I read all the comments , neat how they made a vent in top . Makes one think ,somewhere there is a pair of them sitting in a loft or attic I am sure . Neat old globe.
I also have a very nice one like above picture that I bought years ago. At first thought it was wrong that it was early but Loni Hopp set me straight. I don't know the start and finish of this globe but told it is right after the chimney top ???
After watching this on ebay and reading comments on this thread and others, I decided to make a few comments. To me it's very hard to price a globe like this do to its rarity that's one reason I don't ever give values on such an expensive globe I can't afford. Globes like this will bring out heavy hitters some we know some we don't. They are willing to pay top dollar to get a killer piece like this. You also have to take into consideration the high end texaco collector who needs this last piece for his collection. This person is a wild card as emotion will sometimes get involved. I myself collect Mfa and if a globe came up that none of us have seen believe me I will step up to the plate and go crazy.
You're right Shawn--There were 3 different bidders in contention at the end, and who knows what their motive was??
Does it point to relative value of the piece? I don't think so, but on that day, at that time, there were 3 people that thought it was worth a lot--so who knows??
Like I've always said-- This stuff is only worth what you can get the next guy to pay for it!!! (and on a different day, its a different price) LOL
I agree with Shawn and Kevin.
In my opinion, price guides are for window shoppers. I never care what an item books for...the only price that matters to me is "my max" price.
These guys don't bid based on what they read in a price guide. They bid to own, that, one piece that completes their collection. They are there to own it, irregardless of cost.
When a committed and determined buyer steps up to the plate then the value will be determined. But, for that particular day, time and location only. Next day same item will price out differently.
Therefore, it can safely be stated; value is determined by a single buyer and seller. Different seller or different buyer and you will have a different value.
I also have a very nice one like above picture that I bought years ago. At first thought it was wrong that it was early but Loni Hopp set me straight. I don't know the start and finish of this globe but told it is right after the chimney top ???
That's what I've been told. You can see on the top of my globe where the mold was patched or altered where the chimney was previously. A common reaction of a few when they saw mine that it was a fake because of the white "T". I was even told to throw it away as it wasn't worth $200. So glad I didn't listen to that one. LOL
Thanks,
Rod
While looking at variations of Texaco globes, this two year old post by pumpingethel showed a Fry 17(?) with a device that I have not seen before. It is in the general location for installation of gate/shut off valves.
Can anyone shed light on what the function of this item is and who made them?
Thanks,
Walt K.in PA
Here are two Texaco Chimney Tops and as you can see, they both are with White "T"'s!
Enjoy!
