Lot's and lot's of persistence and a couple of nights of letting the top and bottom fitting (under the packing nuts) soak in rust removal lubrication. After soaking, I twisted the slider pipe carefully (brass) with a pipe wrench. It eventually worked all the way out (it is just a straight pipe so will slide out from the fittings completely).

Yeah that pipe is a pain in the butt. That's the pipe that shows up top in the cylinder if memory serves. I remember replacing that pipe on at least one pump, was just a whole lot easier especially since it was rough and I wanted to polish it.

If you have removed the packing from the packing nuts, this can be picked out with hooked tools, then the pipe should slide up into the cylinder area? They are tough but can be removed by carefully tapping the very bottom of the brass pipe up and out. Since brass is very soft and weak, be careful not to distort. I use a hardwood block to protect from the hammer. You will have to work it up and down, lubricating as you go, but it will come out. Paul www.severngaspumps.com
