Anyone know what material was used for the Wayne 60 ad glass sunburst? I have seen reproductions in chrome, stainless, and brass. Was a frosted piece of glass also used behind this?

Thanks in advance.

The originals I've had were nickle plated brass.

Thanks! Was the glass typically painted white, or did some companys use different colors to coordinate with the colors of the pump?

Tough to tell with the old black and white photos I have, but from what I can tell, there's darker colors -- I speculate blue and red on some Mobil pumps. Of the 6 Wayne 60s I've seen standing roadside originals, only 1 of them had "the brass." Unfortunately, the backing was broken out of it. Darn these cold Wisconsin winters, giving glass thermal cycles it cannot endure.

If you really want to know?!?

1. Was in the far north of WI. I drove up to the driveway and surprised the owner, a grandchild of the original operator. She said "I've had a lot of people ask, but it's not for sale.

2. Spotted, photographed, never stopped. I was in the middle of Iowa, with my parents, in their car. They had no intention of bringing it back. Probably gone.

3 + 4. Were in Central City, Colorado. I was 10 years old, now I'm 24 (today!). I wasn't into pumps, but I was interested in the sight of seeing an old station, then. Same deal as 2, though. Boy do I wish I could turn the clock back.

5. Driving around the small towns near my hometown I saw the matte red beauty with the brass. And old Gulf station owned now by a hot rodder. A visible pump in the garage bay, the 60 out front with various shorter Bennetts, and Gilbarcos. Couldn't locate the owner to ask a price. Found out a year later it went for $400 to a guy I met in my hometown. I was in high school, so $400 was a lot, but man, do I wish I had that one now.

6. I didn't see it from the road. No one ever would have. With help from a great man who runs the Phillips 66 in my hometown, I acquired a rusted, hipless, but enough to fill my avid, young, restoring dreams, narrow 60. Still working on the day to paint it. Can't wait. D-X fo' sho' -- 'cause that's what the broken ad glasses had. Found out later, my grandpa had used it when he was a grease monkey. Not letting go of this one. Ever.

My guess is they are all gone. Except for #1. It has an owner that has a bond to it like me.

hey maybe the one in iowa is the 60 aqua ended up with!?!

ive bought 60s with the sunburst rising,
sunburst setting,
glass on top of sunburst,
glass under sunburst,
painted sunburst,
a couple with frosted glass under,
one with tinted red glass under,
one with painted red glass under, one with the brass side out,
one with about 30 BBgun dents in it,
------ i like em restored with a piece of frosted glass under sunburst & a piece of clear glass on top of the sunburst, much easier cleaning after the resto is complete! ---

important safety tip: when polishing an old original sunburst on a polishing wheel a suit of armor is highly recomended!!!

the polish wheels hate these for some reason!?? & they will grab the sunburst by the cutouts & JERK it outta your hands & FIRE it back at you so HARD & SO FAST itll ruin your day!!!!!!!! LOL!

Me too. After the first one slung out the garage, I got a piece of 1/4"plywood, slightly longer and wider and used that as a backing. The buff wheel won't get wrapped into the cutouts when using this.
