I'm starting to make some Sign Rings that look close to the originals but i need some help. I have a 42" Texaco that really measures 41 7/8" …Are all signs 1/8" under or just some of them? If you have a 48" HC or others, could you please measure them and PM me or post here the exact size and brand? Would like to know 30"s, 36", 42", 48" ………1/8" makes a 3/8" difference in ring..Size does matter! LOL ….Thanks, Owen

Those look great. I would stamp/engrave them, like you do your brackets, because they look so good (they look close to originals). Good work as usual.

I measured two Texaco's for you and one of mine is 41 7/8" and the other is 41 5/8".

I also measured my HC Sinclair for you and this may not help you because it is still in the ring, but my I.D. on the ring is 47 3/8" and the O.D. is 48 1/4" (the O.D, was measured along the edge of the bracket - not the pointed groove in the center, if that makes sense). My Sinclair has threaded rod at the bottom to pull it together and there is a gap.

In my opinion (and I know you already know this) if they are a little to small and there is a gap, that would be fine. The tension of the bolt would hold it taut, just like originals. If the ring is too big, the sign will be loose. Also, if the gap is sort of big, like 3/8" or so, you can always sandwich a few washers in the middle so it doesn't pull the metal tabs together too much.

No problem. The Texaco that was 41 5/8" was an older SSP version that says "Texaco" at the top and "Motor Oil" at the bottom. The 41 7/8" was the common DSP Gasoline/Motor Oil version.

smile Hello Owen. I measured a few, different sizes for you. I would humbly suggest maybe getting the exact size from the customer, as I can see a variance after putting the tape to mine. Also, different sign makers have a little variable too.
Iso Vis Motor Oil............29 15/16ths.
Pan Am by Reliance Sign Co...41 13/16ths
Red Crown Gas by Veribrite...41 3/4
Texaco Gas and Oil...........41 3/4
Flying A Gasoline............47 15/16ths
Sinclair w/ stripes..........47 13/16ths
Sinclair HC..................47 13/16ths
Hope this helps, I'll be wanting a 48 incher.

wink I can see your concern with the rings being either too big or too small. I always thought a 42" sign was 42", a 48" was 48", etc. If the ring is a little big, a mall strip of inner-tube or the like put in the groove would take up the slack and make the sign tight. If the ring was a little short, as stated above, a couple washers in the clamp would do the trick. I can appreciate by the looks of your excellent craftsmanship, you want the ring to look right. You make some nice hanging brackets also. Very nice work.
