I apologize for this lengthy message but I'm looking for help on a recent purchase.
I won an eveready sign in an online auction this weekend and I am now concerned that its a fake or fantasy piece. Its the yellow version that measures 42 x 18 inches. Initially, I thought it checked out because I saw the same sign (different color) was sold in a Morphy Auction about a year ago. However, after I won the item, I became more suspicious when I looked at the photos more carefully (I'm kicking myself for not doing this before I bid) because I noticed that the lettering seemed a little sloppy. After doing some more digging online, I came across some info that I think confirms my suspicions.
An oldgas discussion from 2007 makes reference to this type of sign as a fake:
http://www.oldgas.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=30279&page=1I have not yet paid for the item, however, if I dispute it, I'm at risk of being banned from the online host auction site. I should also mention that the auctioneer description did not date the sign - they only mentioned that it came in several colors.
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Joe
