I have a two questions. I Have totally dis-assembled pump and having a body shop do all the painting. I'm wondering how to get all the bolts tightened without tearing the new paint off them when I re-assemble?

The 2nd question deals with the cylinder. The original cylinder rings are present and appear to be very tightly attached. I do not want to take any un-necessary chances, so I am thinking of sanding and painting the rings without removing them. Is this a good or bad idea?

Thanks,
Clayton

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TRY TO REMOVE THE RINGS. I have see them crack all the way around(on more than one occasion)when taken out of the rings.Clean them up and paint them by hand and LEAVE them alone. You do not want to hear that "TINK" sound. It is unmistakable and you will remember it always. Dave

Agree with Dave. Do not remove those rings or your cylinder will be junk.

I agree with the above, I've heard the sound also. Sometimes I will use brass flat washer so not to damage the skins of the pump. Richard

Use a washer that is the same diameter as the head of the bolt. I have used that method with outstanding results.

One more question please....Why do some Fry 17 pumps have this pipe on one side and others do not? The pump I am working on has a hole in both of the base covers, but no apparent conduit attached as in this photo I found on-line.

Thanks again,
Clayton

Someone installed a drain back pipe. At the end of the day, you could insert the nozzle into the pipe and empty any fuel remaining in the glass tank into the underground storage tank.
