I found this sign for sale on the interwebs and just wanted to get some additional input on it's authenticity. From my research, i have found that the size is correct (16x15.5), the mounting holes are in the correct places, and the lettering is where is should be. The only thing that i was a bit nervous about was the fact that the examples i have found are all dated underneath the middle mounting hole on the bottom of the sign. This suspiciously has a ding there. Coincidence? or cleverly placed? Thats why i wanted some additional help.

Thanks.

Randy,

Yes, of course. Buying quality is of the upmost importance. I was doing this as purely an academic endeavor. I want attain the knowledge now so that when i come across an example in worthy condition, i will without a doubt be able to determine its authenticity.

And of course, thank you for your input!

Lots of them were not dated, but you're correct to ask about it. When dated under lower center grommet. I believe most were dated either 3-30 or 3-31. I've never seen any other dates. These "may" have come in 3 ? sizes. Off hand I think 15 1/2" X 16", 12" X 14", and I think there "may" have been a square one example 15" X 15" Several other Texaco collectors might chime in. Good Luck Doug

I would say it's real, but without holding it no guarantees. The sign as you know is awfully rough with work done on it ?

I don't believe its had any work done, but it does like like possibly a few chips were touched up with paint.

IMO that chip under bottom center mounting hole where the date would be is a coincidence, mine is dated there, 3/31
backs appear too be the same .. ... cool

Notice the length of the oil pouring is different between the two signs, which is correct. I believe the smaller sign was used on pumps and the larger were used on Tanker Trucks. I looked for quite a while last night and couldn't find a square sign, so maybe it was just these two sizes.

Nice example Randy
