I WANT TO KNOW IF THIS SIGN IS ORIGINAL? IT IS A SINGLE SIDED PORCELAIN-STANDARD WHITE CROWN-PUMP SIGN. IT WAS NEVER INSTALLED ON A PUMP AND IS LIKE NEW CONDITION. I HAVE OWNED THE SIGN FOR 12 YEARS. IT MEASURES 15’ TALL BY 12” WIDE. AT THE LOWER LEFT CORNER OF THE SIGN IS THE FOLLOWING MARKINGS, “AD-1954” & THE FOLLOWING MARKINGS ARE LOCATED AT THE LOWER RIGHT CORNER OF THE SIGN, “I.R-1-4a”. THE SIGN IS MADE OF HEAVY STEEL (NOT TIN), IT IS ABOUT AS THICK AS A DIME. ANY IDEA OF VALUE?

Here's the sign he's asking about.

I know the sign has been repoped but I don't know signs well enough to say if it's the real deal or not.I know someone here will though.

I've used a few of the repo's over the years on pumps and I believe that they did NOT have the date on the bottom right as your sign does. I would guess original but this is not a highly desirable sign. Rich B

This one looks about the same to me. http://cgi.ebay.com/PORCE LAIN-STANDARD-...1QQcmdZViewItem
It's dated '51 but seller says it is MAYBE from the 80s.

I know for a fact that someone was reproducing the Standard ( White,Red,) Crown porcelain pump signs dated with old dates on them, just like the originals approx.20 years ago,,, the back of the OLD signs should tell if they are old or reproduced currently. If they are too smooth and perfectly porcelainalized they likely NOT old. Old ones should ave some chain marks on them, (not perfect)... Hard to tell the difference,, Buyer beware !!!

Most of the reproduction White & Red Crown pump plates that I have seen have the word "REPRODUCTION" on back.

Repops have dates as well. Check with Vic's as to the dates on theirs. I think this one is reproduction?????? Beware on the red and white crown pump plates. Ted

In my opinion, if someone is reproducing signs, there is absolutely no reason to put old dates at the bottom unless they are intending to defraud people. They can't be seen from a few feet away. What else would the point be?

Wes(thermactor) this has been a long going battle of marking repop for a long time. I feel the same as you... there is absolutely no reason to put old dates at the bottom unless they are intending to defraud people. Marking the back isn't the right way as it will come off as it is just ink.

ellispaul4, Stay away as you don't want to get burned. Find one with grommets in it so you know for sure if it's real or not. Reason for removing the grommets is because i am sure it had the new style in it.

Looking for anything from Hoosier Pete, Platolene 500 and Red Bird.

The Standard signs dated 1954 are reproductions.
First saw them 10+ years ago in Pergels swap space at Fall Carlisle with the new globe lenses, etc.

Most likely, others sold them also.

I've seen unsuspecting buyers buy them at auctions, swaps, etc, thinking they were originals, but really only worth the price of any other reproduction.
