... Just picked up this sign and am wondering if I should get someone to restore the areas where the paint is missing... or leave AS IS ?? .... for now I am leaving AS IS.

saw that at Charlotte and had the same thought . cool sign. I would leave it . Its only original once as they say .

I wonder if there is a temporary paint to put on that could be removed, or removable decals? The rust behind, on and above the car I could leave, but as a painter I would be itching to paint the tires on... Go ahead, yell at me...I probably deserve it for going against the current. LOL

What is the condition of what's left. The upper right appears to have flaking paint. If you don't do something to stabilize what you have, you may find a lot more peeling off. Leaving it as is may not be the best option.

You could cut out some sheet metal circles, re-paint them as tires, and mount them on the original with thin magnets. No harm done to the original sign, and might look good from a distance.
My vote is always leave as is...
