just wanted to start a thread where we could talk about the auction, since I think there are plenty of people watching it from their PCs today.

prices seem low on several things to me. $1800 for a working porcelain Service arrow neon? seems cheap.

On the surface prices look to be down on some more common items but those good deals tend to disappear when you add the buyers premium and the state tax.

Is there enough money to go around?

Besides the auction today, there is the Mecum sale later in the month. I have also received 2 catalogs, for two other sales conducted by Morphy, to be held this October.

Granted, not every auction is Gas/Oil/Automobilia but there many of us enjoy a variety of categories. I probably would not have held back as much this weekend if it were not for these other interests.

people are certainly holding back... watching lots of globes, even uncommon ones, go for less than half of actual value

I think they have flooded the market, too much too often. I watched some of it today and have to admit I thought there was some crazy good deals. The clock is ticking.

i picked up two globes for about 1/2 of what they sell for normally. i think the buyers premium is too high but i figure it into my bid. if i get it great if it goes crazy with the bp then no big deal.

I never goes to an auction but it seems prices are changing a bit recently, is it the same in America than Europe ?

here for the moment I see prices going down via internet ( ebay, classified, auctions, ... ) and going up in swap meets, shows or specialised sales

a few years ago it was the opposite, it was cheaper to buy in flea market than on the internet

I think condition was off on several pieces in that auction plus I think Mecum sale coming up had a lot to do with some of the prices. Also just so happens the stuff I liked went high but oh well it was still fun to watch.

I think that as people have stated here,
1) Tired of the increasing premiums.
2) Too much to auction in a short period of time.
3) Too much shipping cost.
4) Too high of prices with all the above.
5) Feel bad for the sellers also.

Just watch now and think of where else to sell or buy.

When selling your collection at Morphy, Mecum or BJ auction, does anyone know about what the percent commission is to the auctioneers?

Also, does the sale generate a 1099 requiring the seller to claim the proceeds as income?
