Bought this Self Service sign at the MOKAN sign swapmeet.
The seller thought it might have been from an old Cities Service station, based on the color scheme. Sorry about the squished pic, it makes the sign look shorter than it actually is.

Sign is pretty big, about 10' long and 2.5' or so in height.
Lettering is great, as it is three dimensional and pushed out from the flat part of the sign.

Porcelain with nice gloss still on it, labeled Kolux Kalamazoo MI.
The green color is absolutely gorgeous in person, I have never seen that shade of green before.

Does anyone recognize the sign, or where it might have come from?
Any idea as to what brand of service station it may have come from?

The letters are definitely art deco period, so late 1920's/early 1930's is the age I am guessing?

Thanks for any help! You can email me directly at:

Thanks
Jason

This is not a gasoline sign. This is a storefront sign from a self-service grocery. The type style reminds me of 1930s Kroger, but I am not sure on that. Self service gasoline did not regularly occur until after WW2, and in large numbers until the late 1960s. However, grocery chains went from counter-service (orders pulled by employee) to self-service in the 1930s, leading to the modern supermarket.

These photos show center section, and earlier end pieces.

Thanks for the quick reply Wayne!

That's awesome! My wife and I bought the sign for a very specific location in our industrial live/work shop that we are building....on the main wall of our open kitchen!

So it turns out that it was the perfect sign after all, as groceries fit perfectly with kitchen!

Any idea on what the sign is worth in general? I am happy with the price I paid for it, but would like it to know its market value anyway.

Thanks again!
